Obituary for Alma Buckley Oliveira (Buckley)

Alma Oliveira, 107 of Rehoboth, formerly of Brockton, Taunton and Kill Devil Hills, NC, quietly passed from this life to eternal grace at home on March 11th 2021.

Born September 24th 1913 in North Abington, Ma, to the late, John Buckley and Alma (Greenwood), Alma had 2 brothers, the late John Buckley Jr. and Francis Buckley. She was married to the late Ralph Knight until his passing September 27th 1963. While married for nearly 25 years, they had five beautiful children together, the late Mark A Knight, Norma M Newhook, James W Knight, Rosemarie R Thompson and the late Brenda J Bustamante. She was also married to her second husband, the late, Antone Oliveira, for 37 years until his passing on September 2nd, 2005. She was also predeceased by her daughter-in-laws, Patricia Knight and Loretta Knight along with her son-in-laws, Mark Thompson, Arthur Newhook and Edward Randolph.

Alma’s faith was extremely important to her and while living in North Carolina served as a Eucharistic Minister, She was also an active volunteer with the Outer Banks Christian Women. She was very involved in her community and made countless friends. Upon her return to Massachusetts she became involved with the Sociable Seniors at St. Ann’s parish in Raynham. She also loved playing cards, particularly canasta with family and friends, doing crossword puzzles, reading, dancing, the Boston Red Sox and spending time with family. She had also participated in the Raynham Senior Olympics at the age of 98; and was featured in an article of the Taunton Daily Gazette showing her playing horseshoes in one of the events. As a promise to herself, she went roller skating for the first time at 100 years old and was again featured in the newspaper. Her bright spirit and warm and loving heart made everyone around her smile.

Besides her children, her legacy of love is eighteen grand-children, forty-five great-grandchildren, thirty-six great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild. Not to mention the countless number of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends who have become family along the way. She was a true example of faith, strength, gentleness, grace, humility and love to all of them and they will miss her dearly. Family gatherings will not be the same without their beloved Nana O.

Alma attested her longevity to the fact that “the devil don’t want me and God has more work for me to do on earth that I don’t know that I’ll ever be done”. Some words of wisdom that she passed on to all of her family is what her mother used to tell her every day, “Be Good and You’ll be Happy”.

107 years and 168 days later Alma’s journey on earth ended but her life in the ever after has just begun.
