Obituary for Barbara M Knox

Barbara Knox, born August 7, 1928, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, died peacefully in her sleep on August 27 at the age of 94. She was a graduate of Keene State College where she earned a degree in English Literature. Although she taught elementary school for many years, most of her professional career was spent as a children’s librarian for the town of Hanson.

Barbara loved her family, gardening, travel, reading, music, dogs and Plympton (especially the library). Upon retirement she traveled widely throughout the US, Europe, South America and the Middle East. Never one to turn down new experiences, she even tried white water rafting on the Rio Grande in her late 70s!

She served as president of the Plympton Garden Club and enjoyed writing its monthly newsletter for which she always penned an original poem. She continued sharing her love of children’s literature and ran a weekly story hour at the library with her close friend Emily Grice. An avid reader, her passion for fiction never diminished and she finished an average of three books a week until the last few months of her life.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Clayton Knox. She leaves behind her three children and their spouses, David and his wife Maryellen Cuenin, Jonathan and Jeanine Knox, and Lisa Knox and husband Kirk McNeil. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Plympton Public Library children’s department. A reception to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at the Plympton Library at a later date.
