Obituary for David Walter Sawyer

It is with great sadness that the family of David W. Sawyer announces his passing on July 16, 2023 after a lengthy illness.

David was born in Brockton, MA to Harry J. Sawyer Sr. and Edna Marshall. David was the beloved husband of the predeceased Christine Sawyer for 58 years. He leaves behind his two daughters Patricia M. Blackmon, Maryellen Miller, grandsons Matthew C. Blackmon, Nicholas G. Blackmon, Justin J. Breton, two great grandchildren Jace E. Blackmon and Grey D. Blackmon, a brother Harry J. Sawyer Jr. and his wife Jeanne and was predeceased by his sister Ruth Perkins.

David graduated from West Bridgewater High School and enlisted in the Navy where he proudly served his country for 22 years, retiring in 1985. Upon retirement, David found a new career as an electrician until a back injury forced him to give up this type of work. The ever-resourceful David found a third career as a school bus driver for Sandwich public schools for over 20 years of which he loved. He enjoyed, the kids, families, and teachers he met along the way. He loved to decorate his bus and home at Christmas-time. He told everyone to go by his house to see his Christmas lights which he worked hard on every year and added new things to his collection year after year. One time, even a bus with nursing home residents came by to see his lights. David loved watching his grandsons ride the go cart that he had bought for them, taking them to the beach, and going on trips to Edaville railroad.

Funeral arrangements will be under the care of the Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court Street, Plymouth. Calling Hours will be at the funeral home on Monday July 24th from 5-7 PM. Funeral Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in David’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or any other veterans’ organization.
