Obituary for Donald Francis Barry II

Donald F Barry II, 72, of Duxbury passed away surrounded by his loving family on April 12, 2023 after a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife Patricia (Mathieson) Barry and his children Donald F Barry III and his wife Cassie (Littlefield) of Manly, Australia and Sarah Lucey and her husband John Lucey of Hingham. Don was beloved by his grandchildren Erin, Johnny & Matthew of Hingham and Camryn Barry of Manly, Australia. He also leaves behind his elder sister, Nancy Barry of New York, NY, as well as many, many friends.

Don was born on September 12, 1950 in Chicago, IL and moved shortly thereafter to Duxbury. He later went to boarding school at New Hampton School in New Hampshire, and graduated from Syracuse University.

He met his wife Pat in 1976 and a few years later they were married and had their two beautiful children in Donnie and Sarah. They settled briefly in Tampa, FL until moving back to Massachusetts, spending a few years in Harwich before later moving back to Duxbury where Don resided with Pat until his death.

Don was a life-long Duxbury-ian through and through whether he was collecting sea glass during a long walk on the beach, bird watching, or playing a round of golf, he loved all that the town had to offer. Don enjoyed many life long friendships that he considered family and always looked forward to his group golf trip to the Outer Banks called the Powder Point Open. Whether it was catching up with someone around town, sharing a laugh with a coworker, or welcoming his children’s friends into his home, Don loved to connect with people.

Don and his wife took great joy in traveling with each other visiting many Caribbean islands, Hawaii, Alaska, London & Ireland. He was an avid Boston sports fan and recorded most games for early morning viewing so you always had to be careful not to spoil the outcome until the following day. Don was also an athlete himself, starring on many soccer and lacrosse fields throughout New England as well as being the Mass State Badminton Champion.

Don simply loved to laugh and enjoyed comedy in all forms. His bellowing laughs would echo throughout the house nightly as he watched his favorite shows. He had a passion for puzzles and could be found many a morning working through a challenging Sudoku or crossword. Don loved all forms of music and always loved sharing stories from his 60s trip to Woodstock.

Family was everything to Don and he always looked forward to the holidays with his closest loved ones. A highlight of his year was when his son and family returned from Australia for the summer. Don was a dog lover to his core and always considered himself “Dad” to his many yellow labs.

Visitation hours will be held at Bartlett Funeral home in Plymouth from 4-7 PM on Tuesday, April 18. A memorial service will be held at Holy Family Church in Duxbury at 10 AM on Wednesday, April 19 followed by a burial ceremony at Mayflower Cemetery.
