Obituary for Donald F Pierce

Pierce, Donald, 93, of Middleboro, passed away on March 18, 2022 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Middleboro, MA, on May 8, 1928, the son of the late Lillian (Long) Pierce and Harold Pierce.

Don attended Middleboro Public Schools, graduating from Memorial High School in June 1946. He enlisted in the Army September 1946, serving one tour of duty in Koizumi, Japan as a medic, receiving a rank of T/4. Don started working at the local food store at age 16. He became interested in the meat department and worked as a butcher for over 40 years. He started working for MCI-Bridgewater, Department of Corrections, in September of 1957. For 26+ years, he worked in several positions. While working at MCI-Bridgewater and the First National, Don attended Northeastern University. After 10 years of working 2-3 jobs, raising a family, and attending college at night, he graduated, with honors, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice in 1979. His later employment consisted of 10 years at a local landscaping company. Don finally retired after 60 years of employment on March 12, 2004.

In his younger years, Papa (as everyone called him) loved tropical fish. He had approximately 25 tanks in his basement. He also loved the outdoors. He would spend hours working in the yard, where he and Carol lived for 65 years. His girls remember the camping trips that he would take them on in his “Scamper Camper” and the many adventures they had. As Papa became older he loved being on his computer and would spend hours emailing, researching his family tree, and playing Solitaire. Don left his mark on everyone that he met, beginning with his famous extra firm handshake. His greatest love was his family. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and he made sure they knew it. He would spend weekends, with Carol, at every soccer, basketball, or baseball game that his grandchildren had.

Don married Carol White on June 24, 1951, together they enjoyed over 70 years of a wonderful marriage. He has 3 loving children: Kenneth Pierce, Susan Cowan and her husband, Dave, and Glenda Spillane and her partner, Mike. He leaves behind 7 adoring grandchildren: Erin Spillane, TJ Spillane and his wife, Jen, Sean Spillane and his wife Alyssa, Kristina Spillane, Trevor Spillane, Christopher ;Cowan, and Lindsay Hager and her husband Michael. He was the great grandfather of 4; Kylee, Emma, Connor, and Emerie.

Funeral arrangements will be under the care of the Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court Street, Plymouth. A graveside service will be held at Vine Hill Cemetery on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 11:00AM.
