Obituary for Dorothy C Barry

Dorothy C. Barry, 77, of Plymouth, passed away in South Carolina on July 6, 2021. Dorothy was on vacation in Hilton Head with her sisters when she unexpectedly suffered a medical emergency which led her to hospice on June 23. Dorothy was the oldest of four and was born & raised in Providence, RI by her parents Evelyn (Trementozzi) & Joseph Conway. She was valedictorian of Mt. Pleasant High School and went on to earn her BA at the University of Rhode Island. While at URI, Dorothy reconnected with her middle school classmate, Bob Barry, and they were married two weeks after graduation in 1966. After living in many places due to Bob being an Air Force Captain, they finally settled in Plymouth in 1981, and have lived in the same house for 40 years. Bob & Dot celebrated 55 years of marriage on June 18, when she was in the hospital.

Dorothy was an avid reader and she loved history, art, and travel. Family vacations were always to historical places, but Bob and Dot discovered cruising in 1991 and went on countless cruises together as that was her favorite way to travel. She loved to watch murder mysteries, Antiques Roadshow, and men’s tennis. Dorothy was a very quiet, introverted woman, but she would light up when she laughed and she was very loved. Her family will always remember her strength, intellect, beauty, and her love for them.

Dorothy is survived by her devoted husband Bob Barry of Plymouth; son Robert Barry, Jr. of Bonny Doon, CA; son Christopher Barry of Rouses Point, NY, and his wife Véronique Tétrault; daughter Joanna King and her husband, Keith King, of Plymouth, and their daughter, Julia King. Julia was her only grandchild and Dorothy cherished her. Dorothy is also survived by her sister Debbie Pinilla of Sumter, SC, and her husband Osmar Pinilla; sister Dorinne Persing of Kingsport, TN; and many nieces and nephews in both South Carolina & Tennessee.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Parish, 313 Court Street, Plymouth, on July 28 at 10:30am. Dorothy will be laid to rest at Bourne National Cemetery following the mass with a private family service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
