Obituary for Dorothy A McMahon

Dorothy A. McMahon 75, entered eternal rest February 17, 2022 with her loving sons by her side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Dorothy, better known as “Dottie” by those who loved her was born in Boston and raised in Pembroke MA. She was the eldest of five children. Dottie graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1964. She was a bright and tenacious young woman earning straight A’s and later attended college to study education and business. Dottie worked at John Hancock in Boston and later in her career was the Administrative Support to the V.P. of Patient Care Services and Chief Director of Nursing for Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. Throughout her life she excelled in many of her endeavors, but most of all in her greatest achievement as a dedicated and loving mother to her sons, Steven Michael and James Lewis Lopes II.

Dottie made a home for her boys in Marshfield where she introduced them to fishing, bicycling, camping, street hockey and many pool parties. She was a well admired neighborhood mom and was happy to host all the children in back yard baseball games and events. In Dottie’s words “I watched them like a hawk! But they always had fun.” When after school sports programs were cut Dottie immediately became a community leader and advocated for the programs to be reinstated. She facilitated the sports programs, schedules and organized the events so all the children would have the enrichment of after school sports. In support of her community, Dottie completed the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department Citizens Academy in 2008.

She had a passion for travel and enjoyed her trips to Cancun with her sister Linda and the many road trips with her boys seeing different parts of the country. Dottie was an avid shopper, a great cook and baked some of the best oatmeal cookies. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and consistently made her very proud. She took great joy in spoiling them and showering them with her love. She was a big hearted woman and was happy to share all she had with others. She enjoyed the simple things in life; a great slice of pizza, a good laugh and time with her family.

She is predeceased by her late mother and father Gladys and Alexander Afienko and her two brothers Alexander “Butch” and Steven Afienko. She is lovingly survived by her two sons and their companions, Steven Lopes and Laurie Govoni Enos of Plymouth MA, James Lopes II and Niki Farrag of Plymouth MA, her loving sister and husband Linda and Ronald Bernard of Mayo, Fla., brother Larry Afienko and his wife Mona Afienko of Norwell MA, her beautiful grandchildren Abigail, Gabriella, James and Annalise Lopes, God Daughter Susan Doherty and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the incredible and compassionate staff nurses and doctors of Beth Israel Deaconess Plymouth and with special appreciation to the Beth Israel Deaconess Plymouth Cancer Center for their care and guidance during Dottie’s illness.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center or a charity of your choice to honor Dottie.

Funeral arrangements will be under the care of the Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court Street. Plymouth, MA A celebration of Dottie's life will be Thursday, February 24 from 10-11am at the funeral home. Interment will follow, at Center Cemetery, Pembroke MA.
