Obituary for Elizabeth A Long

Elizabeth (Bette) Ann Long born in Brockton on September 14 1948 to Joseph and
Marion Long passed away at Cape Cod Hospital on Monday morning August 15 th .

She leaves behind her husband, John Cherry, and her sisters, Ruth Grim of
Hyannis and Barbara Long of West Yarmouth, as well as a host of cousins.

Bette spent every summer from the age of 5 at the family cottage in Lewis Bay,
West Yarmouth. Everywhere she went she still had Cape Cod sand in her shoes.
Bette held a variety of jobs after college starting out as the Administrative
Assistant to then Governor Frank Sargent’s top advisor, Bob Caulfield. She went
on to run the hometown office for the North Shore’ Member of Congress. During
this time she became one of the Founding Members of the Boston Area Rape
Crisis Center. Initially, amongst other duties she would act as spokeswoman for the
Center. Fearlessly she would go out in the middle of the night, alone and at great
peril to help and comfort a woman in trouble.

While living in Los Angeles she joined the Starlight Children’s Foundation
(similarto “Make a Wish”) where she became the Coordinator and Facilitator
responsible for granting the wishes of chronically and terminally children, who
wanted meet their favorite TV or Movie Star. During the 15 years she made
hundreds of those dreams come true.

A prolific correspondent with pen and paper, Bette reached to many, many people
in their times of need delivering support and heartfelt solace. She also shared
enthusiastically in the joy of others. A note from Bette is to be cherished forever.
