Obituary for Frederic Hersey

Frederic Thomas Hersey passed away Monday, April 19, 2021. He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Christine (Thompson) Hersey, and his two sons, Keith Packard Hersey and his wife Mona (Ahlkvist) Hersey, and Christopher Lincoln Hersey. He also leaves behind three grandsons Joshua Frederic Hersey, Oliver Kjell Hersey and Alexander William Hersey. In addition his sister, Kimberly (Hersey) Goddard, along with many close nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his younger siblings William E Hersey and Melanie J Hersey.

Fred, as he was fondly referred to, graduated from Northeastern University summa cum laude in 1956. He continued on to earn his CPA and had an illustrious career serving in both the private sector and in the US Bankruptcy courts around the country. Fred never forgot his roots at Northeastern. He was a staunch supporter of his alma mater for more than 40 years beginning with his service to the Alumni Association and various governing boards, then retiring in 2006 as Vice -Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Some years ago, he established the

Fred loved his Alma Mater and enjoyed attending all Northeastern sporting events with his sons, grandsons and nephews. You would find him at a Huskies football game on a fall Saturday afternoon, or at the Boston Garden, rooting on the Huskies hockey team at the Bean Pot tournament, and he and Christine would never miss the Huskies mens baseball team take on the Boston Red Sox in a pre-season game while vacationing in Winter Haven Florida.

In addition to his love for sports, Fred loved to travel. He and Christine traveled to the Orient and throughout Europe on many occasions; both of them following their family lineage while exploring new and exciting sites in many countries. At retirement, Tanglewood would become a familiar place for them; each summer in the Berkshires enjoying the music of Keith Lockhart conducting the Boston Pops and laughing to the Shakespearean Comedic performances they loved to attend. Fred also viewed retirement as an opportunity to give back to his community. Retiring on Cape Cod, he, along with fellow retired executives, mentored new and existing business owners through SCORE, a national organization offering free business services to the Cape and the Islands.

Fred loved his family most of all. Christine explained that hosting “Hersey Family Christmas” was one of his favorite things to do. Whether he reserved a fire placed room in December at the Bull & Finch Pub near their home in the Back Bay, or opened up their Cape Cod home to a back yard “Christmas in July” celebration, the day was a family favorite, enjoyed by all. Fred was thankful for the family he enjoyed so much, and they him. He will be sorely missed by all his friends and family not only for the man he was but for what he did to help those he knew and loved along his path in life.
