Obituary for George Eveland
George Eveland, of Dennis, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in his home on September 19, 2019.
Born in Waynesboro, PA on August 19, 1922 to Ralph Eveland and Dorothea (neé Henry), he had two beloved younger brothers Gill and John, better known as Jack. George moved to Palmyra, NY at the age of 10 when his father took over a dental practice in the small farming town. He played basketball and football in high school and was a devoted sports fan throughout his life. When he graduated from high school in 1940, it was the height of the Depression, and there were no funds for college, so he worked at the Garlock Packing Co., until he learned of a new two-year school called Parks Air School. At Parks, George learned to pilot airplanes and began studying engineering. Skills that were put to good use as an army airplane mechanic in Fort Sill, OK during WWII. Thanks to the GI Bill, George got his pilot license at the end of the war, and flew planes for a private company in North Hampton, MA. It was there that he met a young nurse named Ruth Fleury. She had plans to join the army, but he convinced her to marry him instead. Together they raised one daughter, Linda (known to her friends as Eve). George spent the bulk of his career designing helicopters with Kaman Corporation, while living in Windsor, CT. After retiring, George and Ruth (who he called Skinny) moved to the Cape in 1984. George was an avid golfer and model train collector. He loved talking about football with his grandson and arguing about politics
with his daughter and granddaughter. He had a wonderful, full life on the Cape surrounded by friends, devoted neighbors and an exceptional group of bridge players. He is survived by his grandchildren, Jodi and Jonah Ringel, their spouses Zach and Sara, his son-in-law John Ringel, his great grandchildren Joseph, Kaleb and Eveland, his dear friend Lucy White, and his caring neighbors Paul and Jill Brennan.
