Obituary for James Francis Adams

James Francis Adams, July 30, 1957 – July 16, 2022

Jimmy “The Grizz” Adams drew his last breath at home in the peaceful surroundings of Boot Pond on July 16, 2022. He was the youngest of six children to long-time Chiltonville residents, Margery and Henry “Swamp Fox” Adams.

An undeniably talented finish carpenter and painter, Grizz liked to spend his time divining clams from the surface of wet sand, parlaying a winning scratch ticket from Bradford’s, and nursing his sweet tooth with sips of Grand Marnier. Most afternoons around twenty after four, you’d find him in his truck with a peaceful, easy feeling, gazing at the ocean imagining the big lake they called “Gitche Gumee,” his bandanna kerchief loose around his neck.

His feet were firmly planted in his birthplace of Plymouth MA yet he’d stray afar on occasion, only to return as inevitably as the migrating eels and herring. His few wanderings sought the open skies of Colorado, some mellow vibes in Hawaii, and the company of a woman in Florida. Most women though would tell you that his heart was already given to Freeway, his beloved spotted dingo dog.

Grizz was a keeper of family lore, sharing memories in a voice with the texture of tires slowly coming up a clamshell driveway. Like the Swamp Fox before him, he could make you laugh with his AM radio renditions or feed you with a gift from the sea — gladly bartered for a freshly baked pie. Our family is now smaller but he left us with plenty to chew on for years to come.

James F. Adams is preceded in death by his father Henry C. Adams and mother Margery R. (Croft) Adams and his brothers David C. Adams and Henry C. “Hank” Adams, Jr. He is survived by his siblings and their partners: Barbara J. Cobb, Richard S. Adams and Margaret Shea, Marcia T. and William H. Sykes, Joani Adams, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children.

Visitation will be held at Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court St, Plymouth, MA on Thursday July 28th from 2:00pm - 4:00pm immediately followed by a memorial service.
