Obituary for James J Hickey

James J. Hickey of Marshfield passed away on September 4, 2021 at the age of 93. Beloved husband of the late Claire A. (White) Hickey; loving father of James C. Hickey and his wife Mary of Laconia, NH, Charles F. Hickey and former wife Teresa of Weymouth, Natalie M. Hickey and companion Jack Lincoln of Plymouth, Mark C. Hickey and his wife Kathy of Pembroke, Cheryl A. Shapter and her husband Kevin of Marshfield, and Carole A. Kohler and her husband Mark of Ft. Myers, FL; beloved brother of the late Patricia Loud of Weymouth and the late Mary Fitzpatrick of Weymouth; dear sister-in-law Marilyn Stokes of Weymouth; cherished grandfather to 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

James was born in Boston on April 4, 1928 to Alice F. and James J. Hickey where he lived during his early life until moving to Weymouth in his 20s. He attended schools in Boston then worked in light construction and the retail industry until buying and running his own retail sporting goods store in the early 1980s until his retirement.

James’ outside interests included visits to the beach, camping, picnicking, fishing, hunting, and traveling to visit family across the country with his beloved wife Claire. His travel exploits ranged from regional trips to the Cape, Maine, NYC and New Hampshire as well as numerous trips to the Colorado Rockies, northwest Missouri, Florida and cruises whenever possible.

A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, September 30 at 10:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church, 72 Washington Street, Weymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in James’ memory can be made to the Celiac Disease Foundation by visiting the website https://celiac.org/

A gathering to celebrate James’ life will be held following the grave site services at the Marshfield Elks Lodge, 1321 Ocean Street, Marshfield, MA 02050 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
