Obituary for Janet Fay Fortin

Janet Fay Fortin (Fisher), of Bourne, MA passed away peacefully on April 28, 2023 in Plymouth, MA, with all of her children having been by her side. Throughout her life, she was a consummate caregiver, proud supporter and loving mother.

Born in Chelsea, MA on September 13, 1943 to Harold and Ida Fisher, Janet spent her upbringing and formative years living in and exploring the suburbs of Boston. Notes from her friends over these years fondly paint a picture of the woman she would become; sweet, caring, selfless, good-natured, loyal and quick-witted. These qualities suited her well, as she ultimately touched the lives of thousands of school children and infants across decades of work within elementary schools and day care. Though many of the children she cared for will not remember, Janet's family will always be amazed by her boundless love for countless infants in her daily care over the years, as well as comforted by the fact she was the primary influence on so many lives during a very delicate time.

An avid reader across genres with a prized collection of playbills, she was a life-long admirer of hummingbirds with a delicate green thumb for her beloved plants that will continue on for generations. She treasured old records, the golden age of entertainment, musicals and classic movies - plus anything and everything relating to Elvis.

Janet enjoyed and often reminisced on a simpler way of life, and though she was always happy to enjoy the theater of those around her, she was quick to offer favorite stories and loved to participate in a heartfelt laugh or to sit around the table for a special occasion at one of her favorite restaurants serving tiramisu or cheesecake. Instinctively protective and giving, she was known to welcome all her children’s friends into her house with open arms, plenty to eat, and whenever needed, a place to sleep. Above all else, she cherished the times when her grown children were together, commenting loudly, often and to anyone how proud she was.

Janet was predeceased by her parents Harold and Ida and survived by three children and their families, Michelle Fortin and Jason Chaytor of Bourne, MA, David and Erin Fortin of Glendale, CA and Stephanie Fortin of La Crescenta, CA; and she was an adoring and doting grandmother (Mimi) to her three grandchildren, Cooper Chaytor of Bourne, MA and Smith and Vaughn Fortin of Glendale, CA.

Friends and family are invited to join a Celebration of Life on Sunday May 21 from 12pm to 4:30pm at the Hampton Inn Buzzards Bay overlooking Cape Cod Canal, one of her favorite places to go for a peaceful outing.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Descanso Gardens in Janet's honor.
