Obituary for John Darrel Fiske

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John (Jack) Fiske on July 3, 2021.

Jack was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts on January 26, 1932. He graduated from high school in 1950 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army where he trained at Fort Ord, California. He served two tours of duty in Korea; first in the Infantry and then in the Artillery. For his military service he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, five Battle Stars, the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal. Once discharged from the Army he utilized the G.I. Bill and enrolled in the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, majoring in Wildlife Management. While attending college he spent three summers in Alaska with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service working on the research and management of Pacific Salmon.

After graduating from college, he was employed by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries as a Marine Biologist. In an interim period of three years he worked for the Division of Conservation Services administering the Self Help Act, which provided reimbursement to cities and towns for the acquisition of open space lands. He expressed satisfaction in knowing that he had payed a role in protecting thousands of acres of woodlands and natural habitats throughout the Commonwealth for the future recreation and enjoyment of its citizens.

Jack enjoyed travelling and photography. His love of nature took him to such places as the plains of Kenya and the Galapagos Islands. With his wife Judy and/or family members, he toured such places as Hawaii, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Denmark and Holland.

Jack was also community active, serving two elective terms on the Bourne Planning Board and Seventeen years n the Bourne Conservation Commission.

Jack's hobbies included hunting, fishing and gardening.

Jack was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Judy. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Fiske of Ashburnham, along with his children, Margie Sullivan of Sagamore Beach, Monte Fiske of Shenandoah, Virginia, Maureen Lang (Mike) of Ontario, Canada and Marlene Malone of Bakersville, North Carolina. He is also survived by 9 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.
