Obituary for John Francis Hickey

Gone too soon, our beloved Jack passed away peacefully after a long illness on June 22, 2023. He was a brilliant and talented father to his son Declan and his daughter Niamh who adored him beyond compare. He bonded deeply over sports and politics with Declan and was beaming inside at the growing artistic genius and style of Niamh. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Aisling (aka Dashi) who he swept off her feet.

Jack was a passionate guitarist and a natural talent with a social, easy, gregarious and witty way that drew others in with his magnetism and madcap irreverent sense of humor. Boston born, he loved travel, had a fiery interest in history and a particular fondness for Ancient Roman and American history. He loved travel and adventure, hitch-hiking cross country in his teens, marauding across Europe with his bandmates, and making it to Ireland and England and as far as Australia with his family. He adored going on the road in tour like fashion. He had a keen eye for tiny details with a great visual flair and he lived up to the Virgo star sign he was born under. He worked early on as a taxi driver and developed and encyclopedic knowledge of Boston streets in the days prior to GPS. A great storyteller who relished socializing and loved entertaining friends. He worked for many years in art services coming in dangerously close contact with countless artistic masterpieces, charged with complicated moves and storage of works of art leading to more great stories.

There was never a gangster movie he could resist, and he was a great fan of the likes of Scorsese and Coppola and their films like Casino, Goodfellas, and The Godfather. The Friends of Eddie Coyle was also a perennial film favorite. He loved animals, his famous yellow Lab Toots, his dogs Digger and Daisy who stuck by him for love and scraps. He is survived by his wife, Aisling, and his children Declan and Niamh. Also, his sister Elaine, brother-in-law Jimmy, his dear nieces Jennifer (her family Dave, Phillip, Sarah & Charlotte) and Laurie (her family Kevin, Autumn & Tommy) and his nephew Jesse. He also leaves Toni, his sister-in-law and family, his cousin Jack and family and cousin Mike, his sister-in-law, Natalie and brother-in-law Graham, sister-in-law Lea and his nephew Kazuo and niece Zoe. He is missed beyond compare and we will never forget his giant presence. His charm endured throughout the difficulty of his last days in the hospital where he befriended one and all of the nurses and medical staff and bonded over the Red Sox and music with his roommate late into the night. He had countless lifelong friends who were devoted to him with good reason, and he has left our hearts aching for more the way a great soul should.

We love you forever. Rest in Peace, Sweet Prince.
