Obituary for Karleen Ann Laviana (Smith)

Karleen Laviana (Smith) passed peacefully at home on November 3rd surrounded by her loving family after a short battle with cancer.

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Karleen was the daughter of the late Charles and Helen (Freitag) Smith. She grew up in Waterbury, CT graduating from Croft High School.

In 1964 she married Douglas J Laviana who predeceased her. They were blessed with the birth of a son and daughter. The family moved to Cape Cod in 1979 living in Barnstable Village and then moving to Kingsway, Yarmouth Port in 1995.

Karleen was employed for many years by Puritan Clothing. After the death of her husband, she became President of a small business- Accu-line Products.

She was active in the 18 and 9 hole Women’s Golf League at Kingsway and even got 3 hole in ones in her lifetime (much to dad’s dismay). A member of the First Congregational Church of Yarmouth, Karleen served on many boards and she continuously gave to her community.

She is survived by a son James Laviana and his partner Maurine Williams of Yarmouth Port and a daughter Tracy Henschel of Mashpee. She leaves a brother Charles Smith of Waterbury, CT and a sister Sandra Iadarola of Oakville, CT. She was predeceased by her brother Michael Smith of Waterbury, CT. The joys of her life were her two grandsons- Aaron Henschel of Raynham, MA and Adam Henschel of Providence, RI. Two great grandsons brought additional joy, Mordecai and Douglas Henschel. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews along with dear friends that are family.

We wish to thank all of the medical teams at Cape Cod Hospital and VNA Hospice for their loving care. Special gratitude to Dr Daniel Arnold, Dr Jeff Spillane and her earth angel NP Shelly Thomas for walking this path with her. We also wishes to thank Eren and Mariellen, “her angels in the night.”

Service will be held on November 19th at 11:00 am at The First Congregational Church of Yarmouth. Donations can be made to World Central Kitchen or First Congregational Church of Yarmouth- Mission Board - 329 Main Street, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675.

We were so very blessed to have her as our mother.
