Obituary for Leonard Stanley Ross

Leonard S. Ross, M.D. passed away peacefully in his home in Barnstable, MA on March 9, 2022 after a
brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.  Born in 1928, and raised in Hartford, CT, he was a graduate
of Weaver High School and Trinity College in Hartford.  Leonard went on to earn his medical degree at
the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, eventually specializing in radiology.  He proudly
served as Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, first as a reservist at Fort Devens, MA before fully
enrolling and transferring to the U.S Army Hospital at Fort MacArthur in Los Angeles, CA.

Eventually Leonard accepted a position as a radiologist at Tufts New England Medical Center Hospital in
Boston, MA. He later formed his own practice, Quincy Radiology Associates, serving at Quincy City
Hospital and becoming a well-respected chief of the department of radiology.  Raising his family in
Hingham, MA, he was active in community theatre, and he and his family were instrumental in the
founding of Congregation Sha'aray Shalom in Hingham where he served as president for many years.
Leonard retired to Sarasota, FL where he enjoyed performing in community and professional theatre
productions. He dedicated much of his time and vast medical knowledge to Mote Marine Laboratory in
Sarasota, FL, where he was honored to have recently been celebrated as a valued 25-year volunteer.

Eventually relocating permanently to Cape Cod, MA to be closer to his adored family, he continued to
follow his passion for community theatre remaining active well into his 80’s.  Leonard was a dedicated
volunteer for more than 20 years enthusiastically educating children and adults of all ages on the
wildlife, science and nature of Cape Cod.  Throughout his life, Leonard loved listening to and playing
music. He thoroughly enjoyed singing and excelled at playing the guitar and piano, and more recently
took up playing the ukulele.  Always giving of his time, he was well known for being wise and loving to
all.  He generously shared his deep love and genuine kindness, his clever and always present wit, and his
artistic, theatrical and musical talents with all who crossed paths with this one-of-a-kind, truly amazing
and honorable man.

Predeceased by his parents, Meyer and Lottie Ross, brother Norton Ross, and former wife Muriel K.
Ross, Leonard is survived by his beloved wife Janet M. Ross, and by his beloved children; son Mitchell K.
Ross, M.D., and daughter Sheryl L. Ross, Psy.D. and her husband Matthew I. Berg, as well as by his step-
children; Lorri A. Mayer, David M. Mayer, Joseph B. Mayer, Jr. and Andrea M. Mayer.  Beloved
grandfather and very special “Poppy,” he is also survived by his adoring grandchildren; Sarah M. Mayer,
Tess Dailey, Joshua Berg, Sarah Berg, Joseph Foote, Benjamin Mayer, Marguerite “Maggie” B. Mayer-
Ehrstein, Judith Ross, and Amelia Ross; as well as two great-grandchildren; Aubrey Dailey, and Oliver
Dailey.  Also survived by his brother-in-law George Rittershaus and wife Denise; daughters-in-law,
Kathryn O’Brien and Karen Lynch; and niece, Hannah Puopolo and husband Jeff, who brought so much
joy to him in his final days when he met for the first time and held the tiny hand of his 8-week old
grandnephew, Jacob Thomas. Truly and deeply loved by all who knew him and had the privilege of being
with him, he will be greatly missed.

At the request of the family a private interment will be held at a future date at High Street Cemetery in
Hingham, MA.  Donations in Leonard’s memory may be sent to Perelman School of Medicine, the
University of Pennsylvania, 3535 Market Street, Suite 750, Philadelphia, PA 19104; or a charity of your
choice.

In loving memory of
Dr. Leonard Stanley Ross
(1928 – 2022)

The hardest thing that we must do,
Is to imagine life, without you.
It seemed as if you would always be,
Sitting there, right by me.
You made a difference for so many,
With your wisdom and guiding hand.
But most of all we will remember,
The support you gave without surrender.
They say that eyes do tell the story,
Of this gentle man and all his glory.
While your sense of humor reined you King,
Just being with you meant everything.
We never ever will say goodbye.
So, our heartfelt tears must satisfy.
One last thing, do remember,
You have our hearts forever.
As we reflect on such a beautiful life,
it is only fitting to ask just one last time,
as You did on so many special occasions;
What are we most thankful for?
That is simple, YOU!

Love you Poppy, Grandpa, Father, Husband, Uncle, and Friend.

Written with so much love,
By Denise Rittershaus, dearest Sister-in-law.
