Obituary for Maria P Pestana

Maria Pestana, 79, passed away peacefully on August 22 at her home in Plymouth, MA after a long battle with cancer.

To say that Maria was an absolutely incredible and beautiful soul is an understatement. Maria was known for her love of the church and her faith was absolutely immeasurable. Anyone who knew Maria knew she was surrounded by the replicas of numerous Saints that she adored and prayed to every day. Her home was filled with these Saints and the beautiful homage she created to fill her heart with happiness and those around her with peace and love.

She will always be remembered for walking in the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament parade every July carrying the Holy Ghost crown. She is also famous for her incredibly delicious malassadas (fried dough) and Portuguese fava beans.

Born in São Miguel, Açores, Maria immigrated to the United States in 1978 where she and her family made Massachusetts home. She worked at MIJA Industries in Plymouth, MA as a machine operator for over 20 years.

The most precious gifts in her life were her grandchildren, Gabrielle Pestana of Salem, MA, and little Marco Perry of Plymouth, MA.

Maria is survived by her daughter Rosemary Pestana and her fiancé William Perry of Plymouth, MA. She also leaves behind her granddaughter’s husband, Rick Pestana (Dolan) of Salem, MA, her sister Maria dos Anjos Santos and husband John Santos of Plymouth, MA, sister Maria Ana Aguiar of Plymouth, MA, brother, Joseph Bicho and wife Arlete Bicho of Plymouth, MA, sister Maria Piedade Medeiros and husband Larry Medeiros from London, Ontario, her sister-in-law, Judy Ponte of Kingston, MA along with several of her beloved nieces and nephews, amazing cousins and wonderful friends.

Maria was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Octavio Pestana along with her wonderful sons Marco Pestana and Emmanuel Pestana, her parents Manuel da Ponte Bicho and Maria da Conceicao da Costa Sociedade, her brother Manuel Ponte of Kinsgston, MA, her sister Maria Fatima Calouro and her husband Antonio Jose Calouro of Bristol, RI, her sister, Maria Rosa Tavaras and husband Eduardo Tavares of Plymouth, MA and brother-in-law. Daniel Aguiar of Plymouth, MA.

Funeral arrangements will be under the care of the Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court Street, Plymouth. Visitation will be on Monday, August 28th from 8:00-9:45 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary's Church at 313 Court Street on Monday, August 28th at 10:00 am. Burial will be private.
