Mary Katherine Cushing (Bauer), age 73, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 9th. She was the wife of Edward Cushing and Loving mother of Michele Gagnon and her husband Allan of Plymouth, Edward Cushing and his wife Lucy of Florida and James Cushing and his wife Megan of Plymouth; Sister of Helen Bauer Caranci of Florida. Grandmother to; Peter Cushing and his wife Sarah, Molly Osborne and her husband Michael, Andrew Bastoni and his fiancé Danielle Martin, Faye, Lily & Sammy Gagnon, Eamon Cushing, Ethan Cushing, The late Evan Cushing, Brynn Cushing, Bria Cushing and Taylor Shea. Most remarkably, Great Grandmother to two great granddaughters, Madison Cushing and Gabrielle Bastoni, and Great grandson Leonardo Apollo. Mary is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.
Mary was born in Chicago on July 18th, 1948. She is the daughter of the late Dina and William Bauer. Mary married Edward, the love of her life and husband of 55 years on June 25, 1966. The two settled down in Plymouth where Edward would begin his career as a Police Officer while Mary, unbeknownst to her would embark on her legacy as the dedicated matriarch that she will be remembered as by so many. Mary stepped away from her career as a seamstress to devote her life to raising her three children, but she didn’t stop there; Mary cared for and played an active role in all of her grandchildren’s upbringings and up until her passing, Mary spent the weekdays of her golden years looking after her great granddaughter, which is what brought her the most joy. A true testament to the faithful matriarch she thrived as.
Mary was well known and loved for her involvement within the community. She had a passion for teaching and sharing the word of God. Mary demonstrated this by hosting youth group meetings for the youth of Plymouth as a leader at St. Peter’s Church. Mary was inviting and exuded a sense of peace and comfort, which made it easy for anyone-family, friend or stranger to open up to her. She had a knack for helping others navigate through challenging times, always without hesitation or judgement.
Mary enjoyed many hobbies to include gardening, crafting, baking, sewing, hosting family events and antique shopping with her daughter. Mary was infectiously passionate about her hometown, Plymouth MA. She referred to herself a “transplant to New England”. Mary can be considered a true historian of the National Forefathers Monument; her work included publishing a book “Molly’s Promise to Faith”, holding prayer sessions and facilitating learning events where she would educate attendees on the history and true meaning of the historic Forefathers Monument.
Though her hobbies varied in nature they have one thing in common – all resulted in the happiness of others. Mary was selfless, honest, fearless and frank. She often would say “live simply so others may simply live”. She was as clever as she was brave, and as purposeful as she was kind.
A visitation will be held at Bartlett Funeral home, 338 Court Street. Plymouth, on Tuesday, February 15th, 2022, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. A memorial service and celebration of life for Mary will be held in the Spring.
