Obituary for Mary Ellen Hebert (Hill)

In Loving Memory of Mary Ellen Hill Hebert

Mary Ellen Hill Hebert of Harwich, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on February
16, 2023. She is now at rest with her dear Albert - the love of her life.

Born in 1933 on the Fourth of July in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Mary Ellen was the
second of four children. Upon graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1950 as the
youngest in her class at 16 years old, she began working at Berkshire Life Insurance
Company. Two years later, Mary Ellen married Albert and, over the next 16 years,
they created what would become their family of five. In 1971, they moved to their
beautiful home in Lee, Massachusetts, at the base of October Mountain.

Mary Ellen had a "one of a kind" talent for entertaining and, soon after moving to the
Berkshires, began her career in the hospitality industry. In the 30 years that followed,
Mary Ellen became not only one of the first female bartenders in Berkshire County but
also a well-respected and memorable fixture at some of the finest establishments in
the state, including The Edgewood, Blantyre Castle, The Candlelight Inn, Cranwell
Resort, and Lenox 218. In 1993, she was recognized with the Massachusetts
Governor’s Hospitality Award for Excellence in Serving the Public for her outstanding
contributions to the hospitality and travel industry in the Berkshires.

When it was time to retire in 1999, Mary Ellen and Albert built a home on Cape Cod. It
soon became their special place by the ocean - with the help of Mary Ellen's
decorating skills - where they lived happily for 24 years. Mary Ellen loved the serenity
of the beach, waiting by the ocean's edge for Albert to return from his day of fishing.
Together, they spent their days riding bikes on well-worn trails, finding special spots
to see the sunset, and exploring the Cape's hidden gems. Mary Ellen loved living by
the sea and the visitors it would bring; she was always quick to offer vacationers tips
on the best places to go and open their home to family and friends. Ever the gracious
hostess, Mary Ellen welcomed her family for every holiday and celebration - and
always with her fantastic smile, style, and artistic flourish.

Known by her family as "Grandmother" and forever a woman of beauty, strength,
selflessness, generosity, patience, and character, Mary Ellen's memory holds a special
place in the hearts of her five children (Sharon, Alan, Stephen, Sheila, and Shelly) and
their spouses, her ten grandchildren (Alan, Michael, Stephenie, Joshua, Alexandra,
John, Elizabeth, William, Patrick, and Alison) and her six great-grandchildren
(Harvest, Dakota, Savannah, Adalyn, Noah, and Andrew). Mary Ellen also leaves
behind her sister Marilyn, brother Robert, and many other extended family members
and friends. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Albert, angel granddaughter,
Emily, and brother Junior.

Mary Ellen's remains will be placed with Albert’s at the Memorial Columbarium Wall at
Holy Trinity Catholic Church in West Harwich on April 15 at 11:00 AM. Family and
friends are welcome to join and find comfort in Mary Ellen's final, beautiful resting
spot. For further details, please email shelly.adler@charter.net.
