Obituary for Maryann V Tirella (Slevin)

Born in 1957 as the middle of seven children, Maryann Slevins’ adventurous spirit carried through her childhood in Orange County.  In her youth, she was a Girl Scout, a lifeguard, and a babysitter. She graduated from John S. Burke High School in 1975 and moved upstate to pursue a degree in Nursing at University of Albany, graduating in 1979.

A husband came and went, Maryann truly began her adventures when she moved to Plymouth, MA in 2011.  A lover of the ocean, she always wanted to walk on the beach every day.  With her rescue pup in tow, she did just that.

After a lifetime dedicated to taking care of others, moving to Plymouth allowed her to truly take care of herself too.  Maryann always put everyone else’s needs before her own.  She was endlessly kind, patient, curious, silly, creative, organized (mostly) and a little rebellious.

She enjoyed volunteering her time at the Center for Active Living in Plymouth.  She was always down for a flash mob dance and there was a good chance, at any given time, she had sea glass in her pocket leftover from her last beach walk.  She loved being out in nature with her camper and with her beloved rescue dog, Teddy and she was passionate about building miniatures with her Cape Cod Miniature Society friends.  Maryann was also a talented knitter, quilter, crocheter, seamstress, and watercolor painter with spectacular creativity.

After a serious illness in 2016, Maryann had a second chance at life and was able to do everything she ever dreamed of doing and more.  Though she had some limitations, she never let it hold her back from living her life to the fullest.  She lived every day like it was her last.  Gratitude was her mantra and, although she has left this earth, we are grateful to have known and loved her and will carry gratitude in our hearts because of it.

She is survived by her beloved children. Emily, the artist, John, the creator and son-in-law, John O the engineer.  Her bestie and sister Eileen and her dog, Teddy (now adopted by Emily).  She is survived by her mom, Marilyn Slevin in NY, and her sisters Jeanne Anderson and husband Al from Florida, Kathleen, and husband Frank, from New Jersey, and Eileen’s husband Wally Penniman from Massachusetts.  Her brothers include John and wife Sharon from Florida, Mike and wife Lois from brothers include John and wife Sharon from Florida, Mike and wife Lois from NY, and Rob and wife Geraldine from Pennsylvania. She is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews.

Maryann had many friends from NY and MA; therefore, we are holding two masses in her honor so friends and family could be together.
