Obituary for Maurice Edwin Garrison

Maurice Edwin Garrison, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on
February 8, 2023 at the age of 100. Known as “Twister” by many, he leaves us with many wonderful
memories of a life well lived.

Maurice was born to John and Cara Garrison and grew up in rural Kentucky. He would often tell stories
of the one-room schoolhouse he attended, fishing escapades with his dad, and picking tobacco on the
family farm. He was given the nickname “Twister” while he was on his high school football team.
After the start of World War II, Maurice joined the United States Navy and served as a gunman on a
merchant ship traveling the world and delivering supplies. Before the end of the war, he met the love of
his life, Muriel who was enlisted in the Navy WAVE program. They married soon after the war was over,
settled in Boston, and had their only child Elizabeth. Maurice found a career in the truck repair business
and later moved the family to Hanover, Massachusetts where he served as a volunteer firefighter. He
and his family enjoyed spending weekends and summers on Cape Cod in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Upon retirement he and Muriel moved to Gainesville, Florida. There he served for 10 years as a VA
hospital volunteer before returning with his wife to Sandwich as a full-time resident. He volunteered
with the Sandwich Council on Aging and enjoyed helping the elderly.

Maurice cherished his family and had an infectious sense of humor. His family treasured his presence
and loved hearing his stories about growing up in Kentucky and serving in the war. He was a master
handyman with no shortage of projects and was always willing to share his skills with family, friends and
neighbors. He was a generous and kind man that had an enthusiasm for life. Maurice also enjoyed
golfing, fishing, tending to his garden and walking along the Cape Cod Canal.

He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Muriel (Haugh) Garrison, his daughter Elizabeth (Garrison) Sharp,
his grandchildren, and their spouses, Deborah (Sharp) Pizzuto wife of Richard Pizzuto, Diane (Sharp)
Jackson wife of Jeffrey Jackson, Russell Sharp and his husband Robert Steele along with his three great
grand-children Hanna Wennerberg, Mia Pizzuto and Rocco Pizzuto as well as his younger sister Aileen
(Garrison) Benningfield. He is predeceased by his brother Russell W. Garrison and his sister Lois
(Garrison) Hampton.

The family extends their gratitude for the kindness and compassion shown to Maurice provided by Cape
Heritage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center along with Hospice Services of Massachusetts.
We say good-bye to you here on Earth. You are forever in our hearts and we are grateful to have had
you in our lives. May you rest in peace.

Maurice will be laid to rest with military honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne,
Massachusetts on June 13, 2023 at 11:15.
