Obituary for Michael Kelly

MICHAEL D. KELLY 11/18/1945 5/21/2022
It is with deep sadness we share the news of Michael D. Kelly’s death. Michael died at home in East Sandwich cradled in the arms of his wife, Andrea Lamb. Michael fought a heroic battle with multiple illnesses. Ultimately he succumbed to lung cancer on the afternoon of May 21, 2022.

Michael’s journey began as the youngest of four children born to Annie and Patrick Kelly. Both parents immigrated from County Donegal, Ireland. From all accounts they raised their children with love, laughter and respect. Home was a triple-Decker in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Summers were spent in a cottage his Dad built near Nantasket Beach, some of Michael’s favorite memories and oldest and dearest friends hail from that chapter. Sadly Michael’s father and hero died too young from cancer. Michael promptly dropped out of High School and joined the Navy. He credited his Catholic High years as the reason for his near perfect handwriting. The Navy chapter involved him folding his 6’2” frame into the tail space of airplanes. He was the “radio man” and could speak fluent Morse code. Michael caught glimpses of continents and coasts from that spot as the planes flew surveillance in Peace-time.

Post service he applied his GI benefits and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business. He also met and married his first wife, Mary Sullivan (Clifford). They settled in Carver, Ma. where they raised two sons. The eldest son, Patrick Kelly is a Professor at FullSail University and lives in Florida with his spouse Jessica. The younger son, Brendon Kelly is also married. He and wife Audrey recently moved to Colorado with their two children Sullivan and Larkin. Brendon is a business wizard. Michael strove to provide his sons with the same kind of gentle, loving guidance he received. Patrick and Brendon helped to define and eventually soften Michael. His sons have given him gifts beyond description. He loved their stories and their creativity. Patrick taught him to be a “Gamer” and a success at World of Warcraft, and Brendon provided a continual visual of grandchildren from California to Colorado. To know Michael was to know endless stories of his “boys”.

Michael embraced what his son’s taught him and used those lessons with his second go around. Michael’s marriage to Andrea Lamb includes four additional adult children. They are Matt Reid of Yarmouth, Rachel Reid of Sandwich, Jamal and Adam Lamb both originally from Sandwich Ma. He also stepped in from the very start with Matt’s three sons Max, Jack and Finn Reid now aged 19, 17 and 15 years of age. The “triple threat” were freely granted the best of Grampa Mike, including “french-toast and crispy bacon” from their earliest days. Michael is also survived by Jamal’s two children Kaydan and Bianca Lamb.

Throughout his life Michael treasured his family of origin. Perhaps in part because he was spoiled and indulged by two older Sisters. Michael’s sister Pat Sutherland of Bridgton Me predeceased him by about a year. He is survived by his sister Mauren Creney of Martha’s Vineyard and his brother Ed Kelly and wife Elaine of Newton, Ma. The Kelly clan provided many opportunities to sharpen Michael’s skills as an Uncle. He will be missed by the Creney crew including Michael, Annie, Frank and Kevin. He also leaves his niece Jennifer, daughter of Ed and Elaine and Sutherland offspring Mark, Mary and David. Gatherings of the Kelly Clan have provided joy and connections spanning many generations.

Michael will also be sorely missed in the Recovery Community. Michael “ walked the walk” for more than 25 years. A special nod to Joe S. and all the men Michael has sponsored over the past quarter of a century. Lastly he leaves our most recent Lab rescue Kells Lamb-Kelly shy one treat-giver.

Burial at Bourne National Cemetery will be private. A celebration of Michael’s Life will be held at the Daniel Webster Inn on Sunday June 12, 2022 from 1pm to 3:30pm in the Jarves Room. All are welcome.
