Obituary for Paul Joseph Doyle

We will honor the life and memory of Paul Joseph Doyle in a private service at the National Cemetery in
Bourne, Massachusetts on Cape Cod where he will receive full military honors for his service as a Navy
veteran of war.

To those that knew and loved him, he will be remembered as a son, brother, Dad, Grandpa “PJ”, friend,
and sailor.

In life, his own highs and lows mirrored the waves of the ocean, and he navigated the ebb and flow of
the tides as best he could. In the Navy there is a saying “Don’t give up the ship” meaning to keep going,
to never surrender, and keep trying. Through it all, Paul Joseph Doyle never gave up the ship. He tried
each day to be better— motivated by his love and pride for his family and by the simple contentment of
life.

Born May 9th , 1946, in Weymouth, Massachusetts to Edward and Mary Doyle—Paul was the youngest of
three sons. In high school, he was known for his “good sense of humor” and recognized not only as a
great athlete but as an exceptional baseball player and was named a potential “Future Major Leaguer.”
In 1968, recognizing that the draft was unavoidable, he joined the Navy because as he himself put it,
he’d at least be on the ocean. Though fortunate enough to return from Vietnam, like so many others, his
wounds never fully healed.

He wed Valerie Ann Amato on Nantucket Island, July 22nd, 1974. The years that followed were good.
Together, they had two children, Ian, and Annika. Paul discovered his greatest joy and purpose in life;
that of being a father. He dedicated the next chapter of his life to his family. There were happy
memories of days playing tennis, riding bikes, and time spent by the lake, or at the beach.
Paul remained active throughout his life, and proudly competed in the National Veterans Golden Age
Games in golf travelling to Alaska and Mississippi – taking full advantage of any opportunity to improve
his golf swing.

His eyes smiled when he spoke and were as blue as the sea he loved. His laugh was both deep and
contagious. He was sensitive but strong and thoughtful but goofy. Never ever without a book, or a loving
pat for a good dog. He enjoyed chatting with anyone anywhere, and often did—especially about the Red
Sox.

He is survived by Valerie Ann Doyle, their two children and their spouses, four grandchildren—son, Ian
Doyle, daughter-law, Amanda, and grandson, Ethan as well as his daughter, Annika (Doyle) Hughes, son-
in law, Trevor, grandsons, Grady, Rowan and granddaughter, Kyla.

Thank you for your sincere thoughts and heartfelt condolences for our family’s loss. In lieu of flowers,
the family encourages volunteering or making a donation to the Veterans Affairs office
(https://www.va.gov/boston-health-care/work-with-us/volunteer-or-donate/#online-donations) in
memory of Paul Joseph Doyle, so that others, too, are treated and cared for with the highest levels
of compassion and dignity.
