Obituary for Paula L Markiewicz

Paula L. (Langwa) Markiewicz passed away September 29, 2021, after a 15-month battle against cancer.
She was born in Gloucester, MA on May 4, 1945, raised in East Bridgewater and spent summers at her
family beach house in Pocasset, where she developed her love for Cape Cod. She lived in New York for
some time and then spent nearly 20 years in Virginia. Being a true New England girl, Paula and her
husband Joe moved to the Cape over 30 years ago and have since resided in East Sandwich.

After graduating from Bridgewater State College, Paula went to work as a Purser for Trans World Airlines
primarily flying from NY city to Europe. After that, Paula was one of the first women ever to head a
major trade organization, being named the Executive Director of the International Newspaper
Marketing Association (INMA). Her position required her to travel extensively throughout the world
where she made dozens of trips across Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. She was
awarded the organization’s highest honor in 1989 when she was presented with the prestigious Silver
Shovel. After moving to the Cape, Paula then spent nearly 30 years as a realtor helping people find their
dream homes across Cape Cod. Through her work in real estate, she found many friends that became
like family.

She was an accomplished sailor, captaining many trips off the New England Coast, the British and US
Virgin Islands, the Abaco Islands, and a few trips down the rivers of France. She was also an avid
gardener spending countless hours in her various gardens making her yard a true oasis. She also was
also known for her gourmet cooking and love of hosting friends and family.

Her true passion and love, however, was her Portuguese Water Dogs. She bred numerous Champions
and Grand Champions sending many of her dogs to success at the Westminster Kennel Club. She was
the co-founding member of the Mayflower Portuguese Water Dog Club and an active member serving
on many committees for the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America. She always referred to her dogs as
the “kids”. Paula was always the happiest when she was heading out to watch her dogs in the
conformation ring.

We wish to thank many of our great friends who were always there to help with the dogs, tending to her
gardens, and the innumerable trips to Massachusetts General Hospital. Special thanks to Kathy
Christman, Whitney Fernandes, Joyce Augustine, Gail Maguire, Tracy Adams, Guy Cosgrove, and Ann
Wagner who were dedicated to her treatment and quality of life.

Paula is survived by her husband of 43 years, Joe Markiewicz, her sister Sonja Anciello of Rockport, and
the “kids” Dixon, Glory, Zoe, Abby, Cali, Vinnie, Ivy, and Molly. As were her wishes there will be no
funeral services, but a planned celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice to support and protect the welfare of animals

Obituary lovingly written by the family of Paula Markiewicz.
