Obituary for Peter Talbot Smith

Peter Talbot Smith, Age 84, passed away suddenly August 26, 2022, following an impressive life as an award-winning architect, and as a dedicated husband, father, brother, son and Marine. Born on June 13, 1938, he was the oldest child of Clarence J. and Eleanor (Talbot) Smith. Peter was a Mayflower descendant of John Alden, Priscilla Mullins and Myles Standish. His family has been connected to Duxbury since 1624. In 40 years of practice Peter and his associates have completed over 900 projects in Duxbury alone.

In 1956, at the age of 17, Peter dropped out of high school and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated at Parris Island on April 11, 1956, and went on to serve in the First Marine Air Wing, VMF-513, "Flying Nightmares" and was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant (E-4) in 1962.

Peter's architecture career began when he returned from the Marines and attended Boston Architectural Center while working at Shepley Bulfinch, Drummey Rosane Anderson and Desmond & Lord. His 10 year career with Howard Johnson's included designing motor lodges and restaurants. In 1982, he founded the award-winning firm Campbell/Smith Architects in Duxbury, MA with his wife, Pamela Campbell. Notably, Campbell/Smith was a recipient in 2018 of the prestigious Bulfinch Award presented by the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. The firm is passionate about the New England vernacular style. His other interests include North American National Champion Bodhran (Irish drum) player, making and flying ? scale model airplanes, Boy Scout leader, hunting, falconry and ice sailing.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Campbell Smith; and five children, Nathaniel (Imelda Dundas), Talbot, Jennifer (Jeff Roop), Courtney (Todd Staples), Abigail (John Wisbach); and four grandchildren, Patrick Donahue, Josselyn Donahue, Parker Staples, and Savannah Staples. Also survived by his sisters, Betsey Schweighauser (Maurice) and Clare Mahoney (Joe). He was predeceased by his first wife, Jacqueline Bailey Smith-Miller.

Family and friends are invited to Peter's Graveside Service Saturday, September 10, 2022, 2pm at Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury. Following the Service join family at a Traditional Irish Music session at Campbell/Smith Architects, 22 Depot Street, Duxbury, MA.
