Obituary for Sandra Hall Faxon (Hall)

In loving memory of Sandra Hall-Faxon, age 85, from Woods Hole…

…a painter, poet and political activist: choreographer, dancer, director of a Balkan music and dance ensemble; child and family therapist and, in her retirement, owned a gallery, Local Colors, in Woods Hole.

Sandy leaves behind her sister Jean Cornish-Bourne. She is proceeded in death by her sister, Sally Schuster-Bourne.

Sandy was best known for owning a popular gallery, Local Colors, in Woods Hole for 15 years, and as an artist, for her whimsical collages of Marine life, as well as watercolors and local landmarks and beach scenes. And you could always find her at the Falmouth Art Market, and the Woods Hole Firehouse Artisans.

Sandy‘s other passions were Balkan folk dance and music. She was Director of a 40-member performance group, sponsored by the University of Chicago, Balkanske Igre, still active today. As a political activist, she supported the efforts of the Mashpee Wampanoag for tribal recognition and land rites in the 1970s, and was, as well, a plaintiff in a suit against the Mashpee military base to clean up its water pollution.

Sandy also loved writing poetry, mainly for fun to celebrate her friends, but also self-published two booklets of poetry, as well as “Oh, Do You Know?” little known fun facts about various marine creatures, all of which include her artwork. She taught at the University of Chicago laboratory school in the 1960s; dance at Cape Cod Conservatory and Highfield Hall in the 1970s; gave Balkan folk dance workshops at Woods Hole Community Hall 1950s - 1980; and was a child and family therapist at the Cape Cod Human Services, Hyannis and Falmouth in the 1990s before opening her gallery in 2002.

Sandy will be missed dearly by her loyal friends and art supporters, who admired Sandy for her fun, whimsical, colorful, strong personality, especially Cris T., Joan T., Jane P. , Vivian D. and Renate R. and fellow artist Katerina B., who lovingly took care of her until the last minute of her life. Her Woods Hole community grounded her with loyalty, praise, and admiration.

Yes, I rise to the title of “difficult”
With flying colors
With courage and conviction
And with mighty friends by my side.

And a special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, especially Doctor Hannah Kerman and Palliative Care Doctor Patrick Malecha, MD who took wonderful care of her in Boston.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Sandra Faxon this Summer at the Woods Hole Firehouse…details to follow.
