Obituary for Susan Hamilton (Cullen)

Susan (Hamilton) Cullen

1949 – 2021

PLYMOUTH, MA – Susan (Hamilton) Cullen, 72, passed away July 17 after a brief illness.

Susan was born in Nashua, New Hampshire on May 7, 1949 to the late Yvonne L. Simard and Joseph G. Cullen. She was educated at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, and her passion for furthering higher education would later become her life’s work.

Susan was the Director of International Relations at Harvard Business School (HBS) at Harvard University. She was instrumental in establishing and executing HBS’ fundraising goals and initiatives. Early in her career, Susan assembled a highly skilled team of professionals who traveled extensively throughout Europe to raise millions of dollars for international and planned giving. Susan shared in the successes of her team; she fostered the career paths of many colleagues who credit their success to Susan’s unwavering leadership skills. Beyond her consummate professionalism, Susan was also known for her approachable personality, impeccable fashion sense, and affinity for tasteful perfumes. In her spare time, Susan enjoyed calligraphy, reading, gardening, needlepoint, and relaxing trips to Nantucket.

Susan is now reunited with her beloved parents and will once again be able to enjoy one of her mother’s favorite quotes from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: “The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers & cities; but to know someone who thinks & feels with us, & who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.”

Susan leaves behind several cousins, friends, and many HBS colleagues who will undoubtedly miss her mentorship and infectious laughter.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bartlett Funeral Home in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers and to further Susan’s philanthropic wishes, donations can be made to Wheaton College (Attention: College Advancement), 26 E. Main Street Norton, Massachusetts 02766.
