Obituary

Montanari, Alfred, 88, of Carver, passed away peacefully, on June 24, 2013. He was born in Kingston, the son of the late Primo and Teresa (Bertozzi) Montanari. Alfred (Monty) was married for 45 years to Charlotte Ann (Allen). He was the loving father of Carla Martin and Ann Annis. Alfred grew up in Scituate, graduating from Scituate High School in 1942. He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1943, and became part of the 28th Marine Division, 5th Division. He was sent to Iwo Jima, where he was shot by the enemy and awarded the Purple Heart medal. He was honorably discharged from the Marines, holding the rank of Corporal, in 1946. Alfred graduated from the Wagner School of Sign and Commercial Art in Boston, and in 1950 began his own sign painting business, "Monty's Signs". He married Charlotte that same year, began his family, and took a job with the United States Postal Service, where he was a letter carrier for 30 years. In 1969, he competed against 50 artists in a competition to design the Scituate town flag. His design was chosen and can be seen today, proudly flying on all Scituate buildings. In his retirement years, Alfred carried on with his sign painting business, which included trucks and boats, many of which can still be seen with his original lettering. He also found a passion in restoring Victrola phonographs, and collecting and carving wooden ducks. He carved ship models as well, two of which can be seen on display at the Scituate Maritime and Irish Mossing Museum in Scituate. Alfred is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Carla and Michael Martin of Kingston, MA, and Ann Marie and Peter Annis of Halifax, MA. Burial will be private.
