HAMBY, Annie "Lorraine". Mrs. Lorraine Hamby, age 91, of Stone Mountain, GA, died October 2, 2012 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts after a long and exceptional life. Mrs. Hamby was a star basketball player at Stone Mountain High School in the 1930s. She married in 1937 and later followed her husband, the late Curtis Herman Hamby, to Savannah where he worked building ships during WWII. After the war, the couple returned home to Stone Mountain. On January 6, 1951, Mrs. Hamby completed a solo flight in her husband's J-3 Cub after he taught her how to fly. She earned her Civil Airmen's License on September 29, 1951. Mrs. Hamby had a long career as a Buyer, first with Sears Roebuck & Co. and later with Lithonia Lighting where she worked with her late husband for nearly 30 years until her retirement in the 1980s. Outside of her work, Mrs. Hamby was a talented gardener, a meticulous homemaker, a wonderful cook, a gentle mender of scraped knees, a sly catcher of lightening bugs, and a lover of all creatures great and small. Her life stands out as an example of strength, compassion, perseverance, humility, and forgiveness. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her beloved sister, Mary Moore; her granddaughters Jessica Hamby and Heather (Hamby) Bonnet-Hébert; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. She was pre-deceased by her son, Alan R. Hamby of Johns Creek, Georgia and Sanibel, Florida, and her sister, Evelyn Edwards. A crypt-side memorial service for close friends and family will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 3pm at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
