Barbara Catherine Spellman Briggs, 88 years of East Sandwich, passed away at Plymouth Crossings in the Alzheimer's Harbor Unit. A Celebration of her Life will be held from 9-11am at Bartlett-Santos Funeral Home, 338 Court Street, Plymouth, MA, on Wednesday September 5, 2012, her 89th birthday. John Sheeran of Beacon Hospice will lead the celebration. Barbara graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls, after which she attended Pierce Secretarial School Boston, and then worked for The Dewar Insurance Company of Boston and Great Britain. After her children had grown up, she enjoyed being employed by the Riverview School, East Sandwich. There she enjoyed her position as Dorm Mother where she shared her love of the Arts with the students. Playing the organ, doing petit-point needlework, crewel work for pillows and furniture, braiding and hooking rugs, and quilting for her family brought her much enjoyment. However, her favorite pastime included cruising, making Nantucket Baskets, and antiquing with her husband of 49 years, Richard Briggs. She is survived by son Jay Briggs and wife Rhonda of East Sandwich, daughter M. Jill Briggs of Ipswich, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Barbara was predeceased by husband Richard and their son Jeffrey Richard Briggs, of Sandwich and Kinshasa Zaire. She was the daughter of Margery Schnalls Shugg of Boston, MA, who married William Roger Spellman of Ross Common, Ireland. Interment will be at Bayview Cemetery in Sandwich, located on Main Street, across from Pine Street.
