Barbara Ann Constance, formally of Harwich, MA, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2025, at Harbor Point at Centerville, MA.
Barbara was born on December 24, 1945, in Springfield, MA the daughter of the late Margaret E (Price), and Edward F Corcoran. Barbara was raised and educated in Longmeadow, MA. and went on to study at Vermont College in Montpelier, VT.
Barbara entered the Life and Health Insurance Industry in 1965, she was employed as an Administrative Assistant for Mass Mutual Life Company in Springfield and Hartford, CT, Office Manager for American National Life Insurance Co, Springfield, MA, Sales Representative for Connecticut General Life Insurance Co, Springfield, Director of Marketing for NN Life Insurance Services, Johnson, RI and Sales Representative for New England Mutual Life Co, Providence, RI.
Barbara received certifications of Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant from The American College in 1985 and 1987, respectively. From 1988 to 1997. She was self-employed as a Life and Health Insurance Broker and Financial Planner. She was a member of the American Society of CLU and CFC's, serving as a past president of the Rhode Island Chapter. National Association of Life Underwriters, Rhode Island Life Underwriters, and Association of Health Insurance Agents. The Newport County Women's Network (co founder), Rhode Island Women's Career Network, Rhode Island Business Exchange, the Rhode Island Estate Planning Council and (co founder) of Career Connections. She was the president and founder of Heritage Productions, LTD from 1988 to 1995.
Barbara served on the board of directors for the YMCA of Greater Rhode Island and the Big Sisters Association of Rhode Island.
In 1997 Barbara and her husband, David retired, sold their house and possessions in Tiverton, RI and moved onto their sailboat to follow the sun for four years. Returning to land, they settled in Harwich, MA. It was during a stay in SW France, Barbara learned of the Pilgrimage of Saint James, she felt a strong calling and the next year walked the Camino from France to Santiago, Spain. This led to many years of backpacking Europe's trails, some included, the Portuguese Camino to Santiago, England's Coast to Coast, Scotland's West Highland Way, and Ireland's Wicklow Way. She also enjoyed walking the many trails on Cape Cod with the AMC. All the while, carrying her camera to document and capture the countryside from a walker's viewpoint. Barbara will always be remembered for her ever present smile, infectious laughter, and can do attitude.
Barbara volunteered at the Brooks Free Library in Harwich for many years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Brooks Free Library. She has been recognized as the founder of the Brooks Library Bookstore.
Barbara is predeceased by two former husbands, Thomas F. Tiedgen and Lawrence Gadsby, Jr.
She is survived by her husband, David of 33 years, her brother, John Corcoran and his wife, Barbara, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, nephew, William Corcoran and wife, Michelle of Durham, NC, and niece, Jamie Sullivan and her husband Nicholas, of East Longmeadow and grand nephews and nieces. Sister-in-law, Sue Ann Constance of Portsmouth, RI, stepchildren, Mark Constance and wife Barbara, of Tiverton, RI, Dana Constance and wife Johanna of Alameda, CA. and Katherine Angley, and husband Gregory and children, Claire and Myles of Plymouth, MA. Stepdaughters Paula Gover of Orlando, FL, Donna Tolppa and her husband, David of Portsmouth, RI, and Lynda Fabas and her husband, Angel of Joshua, TX, and by all her extended family members by whom she was known as Nana Barb.
The family would like to thank the Harbor Point staff and Beacon Hospice for the excellent care Barbara received over the past year
