Obituary

Carol Frances Davis, 79, of Plymouth, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024 after a brief illness.

The daughter of the late Joseph Anthony Davis and Harriet Imogene Davis, Carol was born in Houlton, ME on February 16, 1945. Carol, an only child, was devoted to her family, loved their Lithuanian heritage, and acquired her lifelong zest for playing music when her parents surprised her with an upright piano in fifth grade. In their final years, Carol took great care of her ailing parents and always put their needs first.

Receiving her Masters degree from Boston College and winning a scholarship to study abroad in France, Carol began a 50 year career as a conscientious and gifted language teacher. In Houlton and Machias, ME Carol taught Latin and French, and later taught high school Spanish and French in public and private schools in many communities, including Cranston, RI, Brockton, Plymouth, Carver, Silver Lake, and for 17 years at Sacred Heart in Kingston. Her vibrant love of language and culture positively impacted generations of students, and Carol always remembered their names when she would run into them years later. She strove for excellence in all she did, moderating the Spanish and French Honor Societies, acting as Sophomore Class Advisor, contributing to choirs and playing for Masses at Sacred Heart. She was a great friend to many of the Sisters of Divine Providence there and to her lay colleagues as well. Even after leaving the classroom, Carol continued to be a substitute teacher until the age of 77.

An intrepid and adventurous soul, Carol was known to travel countless miles yearly. Maine and Quebec were among her favorite destinations. Hardly ever, did her journey end without some excitement along the way. One of her most memorable experiences was being stopped, held, and interrogated by customs on her return to the United States, suspected of smuggling valuable art until agents realized it was a one dollar piece that Carol had purchased at a yard sale! Devoted to her Catholic Faith, Sainte Anne de Beaupre, Quebec was a treasured pilgrimage. There and at the Divine Mercy Shrine in Stockbridge, MA, Carol would remember her many friends and fold them into prayer. Carol lived her faith in deeds of compassion. She frequently drove several hours to visit those needing companionship or care.

Carol also enjoyed weekends exploring the seashore, mountains, and potato fields around Lisbon, Maine while visiting her cousin David and his wife Lynne. Proud of her Lithuanian heritage, she would attend many cultural festivals all over New England and New York. Never much of a cook herself, Carol also never passed up an opportunity to join a friend for a meal out at a local establishment, especially with her cousin Kathy in Berkley or her friends Elin and Rob at their restaurant in Brewster on the Cape.

In fact, Carol had many friends in the music scene on the Cape and played violin and piano with an ensemble from Chatham. She also shared her love of classical music in nursing home concerts at the holidays. Besides trying her hand at violin and accordion, Carol was a frequent organist and pianist for many churches from Carver

to Wellfleet.

With a great fondness for animals, Carol particularly enjoyed her pets. One wild natured rescue dog she named Jaebaz (Lithuanian for "lightening") became the subject of frequent fabulous tales. Even as Carol became ill, her concern went first to her precious little dog, Petunia, always asking if someone was looking after her.

For the past year Carol was lovingly cared for and enriched by the staff at Stafford Hill Assisted Living in Plymouth. The family is very grateful for their conscientious and compassionate support along with that of the Cranberry Hospice nurses and chaplain who eased Carol in her final passage.
