Charles Joseph Gilbert, 87 of Duxbury died peacefully at home on March 18th, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Charles was born in Plymouth to Frank Gilbert and Rose (Gilli) Gilbert. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Bernice (Hertel) Gilbert. The proud father of Linda Macdonald of Bangor, ME, Steven Gilbert and his wife Debra of Kingston and Debra Galletti and her husband Darryl of Plymouth. Charles was predeceased by two of his grandchildren, Joseph Gildea and Jill Balboni. His other grandchildren include Maureen Gildea of Calais, ME, Charles Gildea of Holland, MA, and Cheryl Gillis and her husband Scott of Kingston, MA. Charles also leaves behind four great grandchildren, Michael Osseyran and Joseph Jordan of Calais, ME and Hannah and Alyson Gillis of Kingston. His siblings include Robert Gilbert and his wife Barbara of Duxbury and the late William Gilbert of Plymouth. Charles served as a Seaman in the Navy, aboard the USS Mindora. During his service, he received a World War ll Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal. He was also a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxillary. Charles and his brother Robert took over their father's business, FJ Gilbert & Sons and were building contractors from 1954-1984. During his lifetime Charles most enjoyed spending time with his family. He especially loved Long Beach in Plymouth where they had a summer house for twenty years. He loved fishing and lobstering along the Plymouth shores. Charles and Bernice retired to Englewood, FL where they enjoyed 30 years. Recently they moved back to the Plymouth area to be close to family. At Mr. Gilbert's request, his funeral arrangements will be private.
