CUDLIPP, David Wisner David Wisner Cudlipp passed away on January 16 in Duxbury, Massachusetts at the age of 88 following rounds of medical challenges that would have daunted many, but that did little to dim his spirits. In remembering him, we celebrate a life that meant so much to so many people, especially his beloved wife, Nancy.
The son of Allan and Margaret (Thorne) Cudlipp, Dave was born on the first day of June in 1928 in Morristown, New Jersey. He was raised in nearby Short Hills, graduated from the Pingry School in 1945 and was a proud member of the Princeton University class of 1949.
After graduating from Princeton, Dave joined J.P. Stevens & Co. in New York, enjoying a career in the textile industry that spanned four decades. Never comfortable when he was not fully busy, after retiring from J.P Stevens and moving to Osterville, Massachusetts, he worked independently for Joshua L. Bailey and Cotswold Industries, Inc. for another twenty years.
Beyond his professional successes, Dave took joy in many other good things in life, especially golf, which he enjoyed not only because he was smitten by the game itself, but also because it afforded him the opportunity to spend so many hours in the company of people he enjoyed. Memberships at Morris County Golf Club, Pine Valley Golf Club, Oyster Harbors Club, and in the U.S. Seniors Golf Association allowed him to indulge this passion; and Dave loved nothing more than to take his friends, business associates, clients, children, grandchildren, and countless others to play rounds that were always accompanied by excellent conversation, food, and drink. His appreciation for the game kept him on the links for years longer than might have been medically advisable.
Dave also threw himself into many other interests that included opera and singing, movies and theater, tennis and paddle tennis, and reading newspapers every day without fail. He was an avid traveler, reveling in trips with Nancy to Canada, Hawaii, Europe, Africa, and other exotic destinations; and his unfinished list of things to do included several more cruises to still-unexplored locations. Dave was happy at home as well, and will long be remembered and emulated as an uncommonly thoughtful and generous host, taking great delight in making others feel welcome, comfortable, and very well fed.
Those remembering Dave with love include his wife of 38 years, Nancy (Macdonald), whom he met on a blind date and with whom he enjoyed years of mutual adoration, great fun, and just enough differences of opinion to keep their lives interesting; his first wife, Janice Nixon Cudlipp; his son and longtime golf partner, David W. Cudlipp and wife Nancy of Maui, Hawaii; and their sons Todd and Christopher. He is also survived by his step-children and their families, who loved him without reservation: Leslie Sterling Maguire and her husband, Dan, of Winnetka, Illinois; Amy Sterling Bratt and her husband, Steve, of Princeton, New Jersey; David Sterling and his wife, Kimberly, of Houston, Texas; and Ellen "Penny" Sterling Shelby and her husband, Rick, of McLean, Virginia. He will be remembered and adored forever as Grandpa Dave or simply DC by his step-grandchildren: Peter, Matthew and Kellen Maguire; Abigail Bratt Vansisin, Victoria, Rebecca and Benjamin Bratt; Amanda, Andrew and Hayden Sterling; and Lindsay and Allison Shelby. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce, and her husband, R. Mitchell Wiggins of Short Hills; and his nieces Darby Marsh and Dorian Maguire.
Dave will be remembered by many friends in Osterville, Massachusetts, where he and Nancy lived for 25 years, and by newer friends at the Village at Duxbury, a Senior Living Community in Duxbury, Massachusetts, for whom they threw a "Pre-Posthostumous Party" last year after Dave entered hospice care - and after which he continued to play golf and enjoy every last day that he could.
A hearty celebration of Dave's life will take place on Cape Cod this summer. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to Cranberry Hospice (36 Cordage Park Cir, Plymouth, MA 02360) or the Salvation Army (8 Carver Street, Plymouth, MA, 02360).
