David J, "Capt. Loo" Rodriguez, 79 of Dennis, MA answered his final call after a life defined by service, generosity, laughter, and love. He struck his last alarm on July 30, 2026 after a brave battle with occupational cancer. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family.

During his career as a Fire Captain with the Dennis Fire Department, and after retirement, his nickname, "Capt. Loo," became a badge of affection among family, friends, and fellow firefighters. It represented the steady, dependable man everyone counted on, the one who showed up without being asked and stayed until the job was done.

He built a career-and a life-on service. He dedicated himself to helping and protecting others. He was the kind of firefighter everyone hoped would show up on their worst day-steady, capable, and always ready to help. He was a man who would gladly pull you out of a ditch at 3 a.m. but would call you a knucklehead for getting stuck in the first place. If there was a fire to fight, a problem to solve, or a neighbor in need, he was already on his way. Helping others wasn't something he did; it was simply who he was. That commitment to serving others didn't end with retirement. He found joy delivering flowers, trading emergency calls for smiles, and brightening people's days one bouquet at a time.

Born December 14, 1946 in Teaneck, NJ to Lillian (Lippert) and Joseph Rodriguez. He grew up in Harrington Park, NJ along with his two sisters, Margo and Joanne. Growing up he always wanted to be a firefighter, but somehow became an optician after graduating from high school. In 1972, he quit his job as an optician and convinced his then wife, Linda (Barbieri) to move to Massachusetts so he could be a "summer man" for the Dennis Fire Department. At the end of the season, he earned the opportunity to be hired full time, and the rest, as they say, is history.

He was the beloved father of Megan Rodriguez (partner Domenic) and grand-paw to Gilligan, his most favorite small dog. He leaves behind sisters Margo Cathie and Joanne Plunkett and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former wife and friend, Linda Barbieri and his partner Kathleen Ray.

He had one well-known flaw: he never quite mastered the art of saying "no." Need help? Capt. Loo was already on his way. Car won't start? Capt. Loo would be there with jumper cables. A project that was "only going to take a minute"? He'd somehow lose an entire day helping-and probably leave with a smile. He gave his time, his strength, and his heart freely, never expecting anything in return.

Capt Loo's greatest legacy isn't found in the rank he earned or the years he served, but in the countless lives he touched through simple acts of kindness, unwavering generosity, and a willingness to help anyone who needed him. He taught those around him that the measure of a life is not what we keep, but what we give away.

His family, friends, fellow firefighters, neighbors, and everyone lucky enough to know him will miss his dependable spirit, his helping hands, his generous spirit and the comforting certainty that if you called Capt. Loo, he would be there.

As we say goodbye, we imagine one final alarm answered with the same quiet confidence that marked his entire life. Somewhere beyond our sight, there's a familiar smile, a helping hand, and a Captain reporting for duty once more.

Rest easy, Capt. Loo. Your watch is complete, but your kindness and your example will continue to guide all of us who were fortunate enough to know and love you.
