Obituary

Derek Arthur Guivens, 37, of Scituate, passed away Sunday, Jan.23, 2011, at his home. Born in Weymouth, he was a son of Paul Guivens. He attended Plymouth North and Whitman-Hanson Regional High School. Derek was a lightning rod of creativity, bursting at the seams. He created artwork, wrote volumes of poetry, songs, short stories and letters. He threw himself into learning to play music and loved to play and sing alongside his many talented friends. Derek was a voracious reader, a true student of many things. He immersed himself in the work of the Beat Generation poets, loved to listen to a wide variety of music and had created a small paradise along with his wife Paula at their home in Scituate, which included animals and a vigorous garden. D was a peaceful, gentle soul who adored and nurtured children and loved animals and nature. He was a fiercely loyal friend and above all, a passionately devoted and loving husband. Surviving are his wife, Paula; stepson, Brett; brothers, Paul, John, Donald and Ryan; sisters Beth, Theresa and Rachel; father Paul; and stepmother, Jane Sullivan-Guivens. He was the proud Godfather of K.J. Gorman. Wake will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, from 2-5 p.m. at Bartlett-Santos Funeral Home, 338 Court St., Plymouth, 508-746-3456. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, www.aclu.org.
