In Loving Memory: Doris Wright Epstein, 99, passed away peacefully at her home in Woods Hole, MA on Saturday, June 8th.
Doris felt that if one wanted something to change, getting involved was paramount – and she remained involved in many organizations well into her 90s. She served on Falmouth's Human Services Committee and on the Board of the League of Women Voters for many years, and was instrumental in the Falmouth Art Center's transition to its present purpose-built facility on Gifford Street.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she earned a B.A. at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, then an M.A. in Social Work from Case Western Reserve. She married Dr. Herman T. Epstein, a biophysicist, and they raised four children, in Lexington, MA.
She volunteered in community organizations until her children were all in school. Then she rekindled her career, working in state mental hospitals and correctional facilities before forming her own counseling practice. The family began summering in Woods Hole in the 1960s where her husband did research at MBL. After they "retired" to Woods Hole in 1989, she returned to painting, and exhibited frequently in Upper Cape shows.
Predeceased by her husband in 2007, she leaves four children: Becky Sue, of Woods Hole; Karen, of Woods Hole; Erika, of Lincoln, MA; and David, of West Hartford, CT; as well as five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service is being planned for Aug 3, 2024. Donations to Doris W. Epstein Scholarship Fund at Falmouth Art Center; Woods Hole Library; Falmouth Service Center; League of Women Voters
