March 8, 1933 – November 20, 2021
Florence Louise Palmer 88, of Brewster, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother,
passed away peacefully on Saturday November 20,2021 at Cape Cod Hospital after a
long decline in health.
Florence was born March 8, 1933 in Boston, MA and was the oldest of three siblings.
She was raised in West Roxbury, MA and graduated from Roslindale High School, and
Dana College in Nebraska where she received her Associates Degree in Secretarial
studies. Florence went on to work for United Fruit Company (division of Chiquita Brands
Int.) in Boston.
She was happily married for 63 years to the love of her life Gerald Palmer and blessed
with four children. While at her family's summer home in Brewster she worked at
Cobie's (snack shack) where she met Gerald while he attended Camp Monomoy
(Seacamps).
Florence loved spending time with family and friends and had many interests over her
lifetime. She enjoyed gardening, bridge, skating, church activities, Newcomers Club,
and antiquing. She was a very artistic and creative person, a knitter and master of
needlework, belonging to local and national needle art guilds. She received various
awards for her works along with the admiration of her friends and peers.
She loved the Cape where she grew up summering every year and enjoyed teaching all
her children how to swim, bodysurf, garden, all types of crafts, needlework and family
card games. Florence was a fabulous cook and especially enjoyed making family
Christmas cookies with her children and to share with neighbors and friends.
During their marriage they lived in various places in the Northeast and the Smoky
Mountains of Tennessee. Florence enjoyed traveling with her husband and took great
pleasure in rides through the Smoky Mountains and the views from Fort Hill in Eastham.
She was an encouraging mother and grandmother who had a friendly beautiful smile
that will be greatly missed.
She is predeceased by her parents Peter and Edith (Alsterlund) Espenhain, husband
Gerald Palmer, brother and sister in-law Richard and Priscilla Espenhain, and son in-
law Donald Flagg.
She is survived, and will be missed by her children Lynn Palmer-Flagg and husband
(Don, deceased), Lisa and husband Richard Brown, Mark Palmer, Leslie and husband
Patrick LaRosa, sister and brother in-law Helen and Dr. Joseph Williams, grandchildren
Thornton and Clayton Palmer, Christopher and Stephen Brown, nephews Eric
Espenhain, Gary and wife Kristen Espenhain and Craig and wife Christine Espenhain,
nieces Dierdre and husband Brian Riley and Kristen Williams and partner Chris Spear.
A celebration of Florence and Gerald's lives will be held at Brewster Baptist
Church Saturday, January 8, 2022, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to
The Alzheimer Family Support Center of CC or The American Heart Assoc.
