Frances Halunen Barnes

January 29, 1931 - December 26, 2025

Frances (Lorretta) Halunen Barnes, the loving wife of Souther H. Barnes, passed away peacefully on December 26th with her family by her side. Fran was the daughter of Arlie John and Lorretta Wright (Cronin) Halunen. She was the eldest of six children and is survived by her sister Barbara Bookman and brother John Halunen. She is predeceased by her sister Neilia and brothers David and Jim.

Frances was born in Hyannis, MA but grew up in the Chiltonville section of Plymouth. She attended Plymouth High School and graduated with the Class of 1949.

Prior to marrying her high school sweetheart in 1954, Frances began studying for her degree in nursing at Colorado A & M in Denver. She completed her education at the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing graduating with a degree in Psychiatric nursing in 1954.

Together, she and her husband Souther enjoyed renovating their antique cape in Plympton where they lived and raised their family for 45 years. Fran also cherished spending summers with her family and friends at their "Beach Plum" cottage in Plymouth.

Among the many skills acquired during her lifetime Fran was an accomplished potter, a master gardener and fantastic cook.

With tears in our eyes, we said goodbye to 'Muumsie' on December 26, 2025. She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Souther Hatch Barnes and her two children: Brooks Elizabeth (Beth) Dennis and her husband Walter (Denny) Dennis; Souther Hatch Barnes Jr (Hatch). In addition, she is survived by her three grandsons: Graham of Plymouth, MA, Taylour and his wife Amber of Cameron, NC and Braden, his wife Kelly and her cherished great Granddaughter Zoey of Plymouth.

A celebration of life for family and friends is being planned.
