Obituary

Gary was known as a gentle and kind man. He was a Weymouth native who grew up in a loving

family as the oldest brother of two sisters and two brothers. He attended the Archbishop

Williams School in Braintree and graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in

biology. While a college student, he met his beloved wife of 52 years, Sara. They both worked at

Lakeville Hospital and played tennis on their lunch breaks. Gary always loved exploring and

observing nature and this passion evolved into a career as an environmental engineer. He

worked in Massachusetts and later Maine where he designed solid and waste water systems.

Gary was curious about the world and a voracious reader throughout his life. He loved novels,

history, political analysis, science, and philosophy. A favorite event was the annual read-athon of

Moby Dick in New Bedford. He dove deep when researching topics and loved to share articles

about common interests with family and friends.

Some of Gary's passions included food, music, and nature. Throughout his life, Gary loved

eating new foods and in later years tried his hand at being a home chef with recipes from all

parts of the world. His musical taste was just as broad and included rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass,

and classical. His grandchildren recall him picking them up from elementary school, blasting

opera, his favorite, from the car. The natural world also deeply fulfilled him, whether hiking the

Maine woods, observing the wind in the trees from his bedroom window, raising goats, or giving

a home to many a stray dog and cat. The ocean was his favorite, and in recent years he was

happy to make his home near the water in Plymouth. He could often be found walking the

beaches, taking photos of shore birds. In the last several years, Gary was lucky to combine two

of his loves, nature and music. He camped in the woods of western Massachusetts in an

Airstream trailer with Sara (and their cat Sam) and also attended classical music performances

at Tanglewood.

Gary was loved by many. His wife Sara; daughters Kristine and Rachel; siblings and in-laws

Joanne, Michael, Brian, and Maryellen, Bob, Judy, Katie, and Mark; sons-in law Matt and

Michael; grandchildren Kendall, Connor, Fiona and Benji; nieces, nephews, and dear friends will

hold him in their hearts always.

A celebration of life for family and friends will be held in March. In lieu of flowers, those wishing

to honor Gary can make a donation to the Greater Boston Food Bank.
