Obituary

Helen Marie White of Sandwich, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at her home on April 15, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and her cherished little dog, Chloe. She was 88 years old.

Born on September 28, 1937, in Greenwich, Connecticut, Helen was the beloved daughter of Frederick and Elsie Walters. She was one of twelve children-eight brothers and four sisters-and the last surviving member of her family.

Helen spent her early years between the family home in Greenwich, CT, and Westerlo, New York. She graduated from Berne-Knox Central School, Class of 1956, where she fondly remembered her inspiring teachers, love of learning, and involvement in music, school plays, and cheerleading.

In 1967, Helen married her "prince charming," Robert White of New Canaan, Connecticut. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and travel. Robert, a corporate pilot with an adventurous spirit, and Helen explored much of the United States and Europe, spending weekends sailing and camping. Their time together, though cut short by Robert's passing in 2016 was filled with beautiful memories that Helen carried with her always.

Helen began her career in banking after moving to Ridgefield, Connecticut, in 1969. She dedicated 18 years to First Federal Bank, serving the communities of Ridgefield and New Canaan with professionalism and warmth.

After retiring in 2002, Helen moved to Sandwich, Massachusetts, to be closer to her family. Never one to sit still, she took on a part-time position at Eastern Bank, embracing the opportunity to connect with her new community on Cape Cod.

Helen had a deep love for life's simple and meaningful pleasures-traveling, gardening, attending New York theater, and spending time with friends and family. Though she never had children of her own, she was a devoted and loving presence in the lives of her twelve nieces and nephews and eight great-nieces and nephews, all of whom she considered her own.

She had a special bond with animals throughout her life, including her cat Samantha, the family dog Mr. Henry, and her constant companion, Chloe.

Helen will be remembered for her quick wit, strength, kindness, and unwavering love for others. She had a remarkable way of making everyone feel special and cared for. Her love of nature and animals reflected her gentle spirit, and her humor brought light to those around her. Those who knew her often said she could have run for town selectman-or even President-because of her natural ability to lead with heart, fairness, and compassion.

Helen leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and deep connection. She will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A celebration of Helen's life will be held on June 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Following the service, family and friends are warmly invited to gather at Cindy and Helen's home, 32 Piccadilly Road, Sandwich, to continue sharing memories and honoring her life.

A private burial will take place in late September at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, Connecticut.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Helen's memory to a local animal shelter or hospice organization, honoring her deep love for animals and compassionate care.
