James Harvie Hill (Jim) of Marshfield died January 21, 2016 at the age of 68 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a 20 year battle with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Born in Hartford, Connecticut to Francesca and Parmelee Hill on November 1, 1947 he grew up in Wayland, Massachusetts with his two brothers, Parmelee of Houston and Edward of Chelmsford.

In 1967 Jim married his Wayland High School sweetheart, Eleanor (Ellie) Baer. They were married 48 years and have three children; James of Marshfield, Douglas and his wife Marcy of Poughquag, New York, and Sarah and her husband Bruce Nobles of Halifax, Massachusetts. They have four grandchildren, Olivia (14) and Emma (10) Hill and Cadence (8) and William (5) Nobles.

Jim studied at Middlebury College, taking time out to serve his country in Vietnam with the United States Army, and received his BA and MA degrees at the University of Massachusetts when he returned. He jokingly referred to himself as a "bureaucrat" having devoted his entire career to public service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He held various positions at the Department of Public Health including Associate Commissioner and at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he was Assistant Vice Chancellor. In retirement he continued his service on several boards and commissions until his death.

Although Jim had cancer for twenty years, he did not let it slow him down. His passions were his family, boating, ice cream, and basketball, which he refereed during his retirement. Recently he and Ellie wintered in Florida, where they enjoyed time with friends and family and played golf.

There will be a memorial reception to honor Jim's life in April. Those who would like to attend should contact the family.
