Ryan, James Patrick "Bad Jimmy" of Plymouth, MA formerly of Malden and Somerville passed away at home, surrounded by family on September 29, 2021 at age 91. Loving husband of 72 years to Gertrude E. (McDonough). Also survived by granddaughters Brigid Surdam and her husband David of Billerica and Heather Denham and her husband Peter of Nashua, NH and great-grandchildren Breena, Sean and Emerson. He was predeceased by his two sons James and Robert, grandson Shane and brother Leslie "Red".
James was born to Daniel and Ethel (Bulmer) Ryan on February 24, 1930. He grew up in Somerville, MA where he met his great love, Gertrude, at 14 years old and frequently got into mischief. He lived a long, illustrious life and had many occupations starting at age 14 when he was an oil burner installer followed by a slight exaggeration in his age and enlisting in the U.S. Army during WWII at age 15. He then became a Merchant Marine, travelling the world and collecting stories along the way. He was a truck driver, a Teamster, a Master Electrician and Lt. in the Somerville Fire Department. As a Master Electrician he also had the opportunity to work on some local TV shows and movies.
James had a great love for the open sea and would go fishing every chance he got. He enjoyed woodworking, collecting tools, giving people a hard time, a good laugh, traveling, a nice rum and coke and losing "graciously at poker". Most of all though, James loved his family.
