Obituary

Jane Graeber Hyer passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at her home on King Caesar Road in Duxbury, Massachusetts.

Jane is survived by her devoted husband and life partner of nearly 70 years, Frank; their daughter, Laura Hyer of Lincoln, RI; their sons, Frank Hyer and his wife Kim (Strauch) of Portsmouth, NH, and David Hyer and his wife Mary (Whalen) of Sudbury, MA; as well as four beloved grandchildren: Matthew, David, Emily, and Kerstin Hyer.

Jane and Frank's love story began with what Frank often described as "a bolt of lightning." From the moment they met, it was love at first sight. Frank's carefully laid plans for the future shifted instantly—he ended a prior engagement, turned down dental school, declared his unwavering love, and convinced Jane to marry him.

Within a year, they welcomed their first child, Laura, and moved to Newark, Delaware. Frank's continued educational and professional pursuits led the family to Milwaukee and Appleton, Wisconsin, where their second child, Frank III, was born. In 1963, shortly before the arrival of their third child, David, they made a life-changing move a thousand miles east to settle in Duxbury, Massachusetts—a town that would become their cherished home for decades.

From the moment they arrived, Jane and Frank were embraced by a community that quickly turned into lifelong friends. As active members of the Duxbury Yacht Club, they became enthusiastic tennis players and golfers, passions Jane later passed on to her children. While she loved being near the water, Jane was famously cautious—family members fondly recall that she rarely swam, stepped onto a sailboat, or rode in a motorboat without firmly requesting, "Slow down!"

Jane devoted herself to creating a home filled with energy, humor, and love. While Frank focused on building and guiding Thayer Scale, Jane was the heart and architect of family life—managing the daily whirlwind of meals, carpools, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and endless activities. Her meals may not have always been gourmet, but they were plentiful, and her kitchen was a place of laughter and togetherness.

As their children grew, Jane and Frank embraced new adventures. In the 1980s, they discovered Hilton Head Island, spending several months each year enjoying tennis, golf, and the community at Sea Pines Country Club. Later, they rekindled their love for lakeside living, making cherished memories at their home on beautiful Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire.

Jane's life was defined by her devotion to family, her enduring friendships, and her ability to create warmth and joy wherever she went.
