Jean Cecilia Demeritt (Harlin) of Plymouth passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Life Care Center of Plymouth on Saturday morning April 13, 2024, at the age of eighty-four. Jean predeceased by loving parents Mary C (Landry) and Joseph Harlin. She was born on March 30, 1940 in Boston, Massachusetts, the youngest of 9 children. She leaves behind her brother Joseph Harlin Jr. of New Hampshire, she was predeceased by her siblings Ambrose, James, William, Charles, Marie, Paul and John.
Beloved mother of Cheryl Carreiro and her husband Mark of Swansea, Mary Jane Twieraga and her late husband Alan of Plymouth, the late Russell Demeritt Jr. and his wife Brenda of Cincinnati, Ohio and Joseph Demeritt of Plymouth.
Jean was called Nana by her 12 grandchildren- Cherie, Jean, Steven, Travis, Christopher, Michael, Joshua, Sarah, Samantha, Mia, Benjamin, and Caleb, 28 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren. She was an aunt to many nieces and nephews and known as Nana Jean to all those who knew and loved her. Jean cherished being a mother, nana, and aunt.
Jean worked for St. Mary's Rectory as a housekeeper in the 60's. She also worked to help start up Plymouth South Shore Community Action Council in 1965, she was a civil rights activist who marches in Washington in the late 60's. She fought for equal rights for all, jobs, women's right and later Walked for Hunger.
The most important thing to Jean was her faith and her family. She loved it when the family got together on the 4th of July and at family reunions. She loved music and had a wonderful singing voice. She belonged to Sweet Adelines, sang in choir at St Peters Church many years ago and enjoyed singing at Governor Carver when her friend would play the piano. Her favorite restaurants through the years were Lobster Hut, Colonial Restaurant, Ernie's and Arthur's. Shopping at Macy's was one of her favorite things to do. Jean loved antiques and listening to the radio channel 99.1. She was a giver and fighter! She would always say to love one another.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the dedicated nurses, CNA's and staff at Life Care of Plymouth for the exceptional care they gave their mom. The family would also like to thank VNA Hospice Norwell as well.
Jean's funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 10th 2024 at 10:30am at Saint Peter's Catholic Church 86 Court Street, Plymouth, MA 02360
The burial will be private.
