Jean Melville Quimby Magnusson - 95 of Harwich, MA died at home on Saturday, January 4,
2020 surrounded lovingly by her daughter Jean Quimby Phillip, her son Thomas Reynolds
Quimby and his wife, Christine. She was born in Baltimore Md on July 31, 1924 as her parents
George Horner Melville and Dorothy Freeman Melville Barron were owners of the Melville
Woolen Company in Oakland Mills, Md. She is predeceased by her parents, her husbands; Ellis
Sturgis Quimby and Philip Magnusson, her brothers George Horner Melville Jr, James Atlee
Melville and her sister Anne Melville Johnson. She graduated from New Rochelle High School,
NY and matriculated to Randolph Macon College graduating with a major in Latin, played field
hockey, tennis and softball, also was a Phi Mu sorority sister. She was a resident of Westfield,
NJ from 1953 until 1970 and next moved to Vero Beach Fl in which she enjoyed tennis at the
local parks and later at The Grand Harbor club. She was a great athlete and competitor and
began to play golf at 70 years old. While in Vero Beach she was a co-teacher at The Little Red
School House, a preschool for children. Most of her life was spent taking care of her family with
her wonderful holiday get togethers, her radiant positivity, and true beauty. She was
introduced to Cape Cod through the Quimby-Reynolds family and spent many years here
enjoying its beauty. She loved to sing and brought joy to our hearts while singing with Sarah
Jane Mason, the music therapist of the wonderful Hospice music program in her final days. She
also resided in New Rochelle, NY, Charlestown, RI., Orleans, MA and Yarmouth Port Ma. She is
survived by children Thomas Reynolds Quimby of Wellfleet, MA and Sebastian, Fl, James Ellis
Quimby of Harwich, MA. and Jean Quimby Phillip of Harwich, MA and daughter-in- law,
Christine Smith Quimby. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Melissa Quimby Weinrich,
Thomas Reynolds Quimby, Jr, Michelle Phillip, Ryan Phillip, Kelley Quimby, Leah Quimby, James
Ellis Quimby Jr., 9 great grandchildren and her brother Douglas Freeman Melville of Niantic, Cn.
A graveside service with family will take place this summer as she will be interred in the family
cemetery in Orleans, MA. In lieu of flowers, if desired a small gift to the Hospice of the VNA of
Cape Cod will help these angels continue their wonderful services.
