Joan Nickerson of Dennis, MA passed away January 15, 2026. She was predeceased by her husband, Norton Nickerson. She is survived by her children William (Connie), Susan (Eric) and Jonathan (Elise) Nickerson, grandchildren Silas and Benjamin, and many nieces and nephews.

Joan’s dream of earning a college degree was enabled through receiving the first Ann Castonguay scholarship award at the D-Y High School. She attended the University of Massachusetts, earning a degree in mathematics. After marrying, she and Norton lived in upstate New York, then in Missouri before settling in Reading where they raised their children.

Joan cherished time with her family, instilling in her children a love of nature and a passion for traveling. She enjoyed going to the beach, going for walks, and listening to music. Joan held a zeal for volunteerism, serving as a docent at the New England Aquarium and Chairperson of the Town of Reading Conservation Commission. She later enjoyed being a docent at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, and serving as secretary of the Old South Dennis Village Association.

Inquisitive by nature, Joan liked to ask many questions, often leading to great discussions. An avid reader, knowledge and education were of high importance to her throughout her life. In retirement, Joan enjoyed courses at 4C’s through the Life Long Learning program.

Joan will be remembered for her positive attitude, her bright smile, her indefatigable work ethic, and her insatiable appetite for learning. We all hope to carry on her resilient and questing spirit, and learn from her example of strength, commitment and determination.
