Obituary

JOERG HAEBERLI, 89, resident of East Orleans, MA and Morris Plains, NJ, entered eternal rest on Nov. 13, 2017 in Orleans, MA after suffering complications of prostate cancer. He was born July 20, 1928 in Bulach, Switzerland, son of Ernst Otto and Elvira Carraro Haeberli. He received his primary and secondary education first in Lima then in Arequipa, Peru. He graduated with a degree in organic chemistry from The Tecknikum, Wintertur, Switzerland. In 1951 he emigrated to the US and began his career as a development chemist with Geigy Chemicals in Cranston, RI then with Ciba Geigy in Summit, NJ. He received his PhD in organic chemistry from Brown University, Providence, RI in 1960 while working part time for Geigy. While with Geigy he had several patents issued in his name. Shortly before then after retirement from Ciba Geigy he started to publish articles in the field of pre-Columbian art, namely its textiles and ceramics. He became a highly respected scholar in this field, identifying the Siguas culture from the local valleys of Arequipa: Sihuas, Vitor and Majes. His last paper which discusses the origins and development of SAIS textile imagery will be published posthumously by The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology UCLA. Joerg was a fine gentleman with old world courtly manners. He had a great love for the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. He enjoyed Dutch 17th century painting, the writer Herman Hesse, fine wines and French cuisine, Swiss milk chocolate, and many other fine things. He spoke four language: Swiss, German, Spanish and English. He will be missed by all who knew him. He leaves his wife of 59 years, Carolyn Clary Haeberli, two sons, Eric Haeberli, San Francisco, Peter Haeberli, Princeton, NJ and four grandchildren. His daughter Maya predeceased him in 1966. At his request, his funeral arrangements were private.
