Obituary

Holmes, John Edwin, 91, of Plymouth, died on Sunday, June 7th, at the Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the army in the European theater. John returned and went to work for the town of Plymouth where he was the Superintendant of the Water Department, and later became Assistant Director of the Department of Public Works from which he later retired. He was married to Eleanor Hall, who passed away in 1997. They had no children. John was born on February 7, 1924 in Plymouth, the son of Edwin and Emma Holmes. He was the youngest of six children, often noting that he was born twenty minutes after his twin sister Jeanne. John had four sisters; Jeanne, Lucy, Barbara and Jane and a brother, Cornelius. John enjoyed many interests. He was an avid tennis player, a gardener, a woodworker and he enjoyed fishing. He was devoted to his godchildren, his wider family and friends. John was a member and past president of the Old Colony Club and a member of the Plymouth Antiquarian Society. John was also a member of the Woodchucks, making wooden toys as gifts for children. He will be sorely missed. John leaves behind a brother, Cornelius Holmes, 101, and a sister, Jeanne Holmes, 91, both of Plymouth, as well as a number of nephews and nieces. Funeral arrangements will be made by the Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court Street, Plymouth. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 15th at 10:30 am at Vine Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation in John's memory, please consider the MSPCA at www.mspca.org or Angell Memorial Hospital, 350 S Huntington Avenue, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
